Introduction

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full-stage Manitoba Class 5 driver's licence without restrictions. 
  • Must be able and willing to travel to worksites within the province by ground and air transportation, which may require overnight stays (possibly in a camp environment) and work extended hours.
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor rough terrain environment in both winter and summer.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position i.e. continuously standing, walking, sitting, lifting and carrying up to 25 kg.
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Experience in roadway construction including but not limited to checking, scaling, surveying and inspection.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety, Health and Risk Management policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with internal and external stakeholders (the public, contractors etc.).
  • Excellent written communication skills with the ability to complete clear and concise daily diaries, worksheets and/or reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative with progressive responsibility and good judgement. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction
  • Ability to be a team player and work effectively with others in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications (Excel, Word and Outlook).
Desired:
  • Knowledge of department construction specifications, procedures and guidelines relating to inspection and aggregate testing.
Duties:
The Highway Engineering Assistant (HEA) reports to the Highway Project Technologists and receives Lead Hand direction from the Highway Construction Technician (HCT).  The FEA performs elementary technical work while adhering to department standards, specifications, policies, and procedures. The HEA will perform one or more of the following individual functions: Survey Assistant, Checker, Scale Person, and Flag person.
