As an Operating Technician Trainee at Manitoba Hydro, you will participate in a four to six-year training program which includes on-the-job training and trades schools. Operating Technician Trainees train to develop skills and techniques in control, regulation, and maintenance of all operating elements and auxiliaries used to generate and convert electrical energy in a power system. During your Operating Technician training program, you will be enrolled in the Power Electrician or the Mechanical Technician Apprenticeship Programs. While in the programs, participants receive rotational training at various locations throughout the province. This will result in you obtaining dual certification as an Operating Technician Journeyperson (Electrical or Mechanical).
NOTE: All positions will be posted to Gillam, Manitoba. Northern benefits will apply.
Responsibilities:
- Assist Technicians and Journeypersons to install, test, and perform regular maintenance on equipment.
- Develop skills and techniques in control and regulation of all operating elements and auxiliaries used to generate and convert electrical energy in a power system.
- Assist with troubleshooting, making necessary repairs under regular and emergency conditions.
- Perform all clearance procedures as per station and safety guidelines.
Qualifications:
- High school graduate with a minimum of the following courses:
Mathematics 40S (Applied or Pre-Calculus); Physics 40S; and English 40.
OR - Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Licence issued by the Province of Manitoba (or equivalent Provincial certification) and Grade 12 or equivalent, with the willingness to take part in, and successfully complete Applied or Pre-Calculus Math 40S and Physics 40S within a specified amount of time, if required.
OR - Power Electrician Licence issued by the Province of Manitoba (or equivalent Provincial certification) and Grade 12 or equivalent, with the willingness to take part in, and successfully complete Applied or Pre-Calculus Math 40S and Physics 40S within a specified amount of time, if required.
OR - Construction/Industrial Electrician Licence issued by the Province of Manitoba (or equivalent Provincial certification) and Grade 12 or equivalent, with the willingness to take part in, and successfully complete Applied or Pre-Calculus Math 40S and Physics 40S within a specified amount of time, if required.
In addition, this Training Program requires you to:
- Possess a valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence (intermediate or full).
- Obtain full certification as a Station Operator.
- Maintain a level of physical fitness and mental alertness appropriate for the duties you are performing.
- Have good physical coordination; manual dexterity and be able to lift heavy objects from a variety of physical positions while working at heights requiring bucket truck or ladder and while working in confined spaces.
- Be capable of communicating effectively orally and in writing.
- Have good hearing and accurate colour perception.
- Have basic computer skills.
- Have a mechanical aptitude to satisfy all requirements of the position.
- Be willing to acquire an approved set of personal hand tools.
- Be willing to attain the educational requirements.
- Be willing to relocate to various locations within Manitoba, including Gillam.
NOTES/COMMENTS:
- Candidates will be required to complete their core trades in addition to successfully completing their Station Operating Certification.
- Candidates may be required to begin training in either operations or their core trade to be determined by operation requirements.
- Candidates will be subject to rotational opportunities as required to successfully complete core training program as determined by the Trades Training Coordinator.
- Candidates may be required to carry out duties on a rotating shift basis and will be required to assume stand by duties.
- These positions may require authorized access to critical physical and/or cyber assets. A personnel risk assessment and clearance may be required.
- Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Training may be required and must be completed prior to transfer date and renewed annually.

Starting Wage: $24.24-$33.52 hourly
Start (Trade Certified): $37.56-$42.79 hourly
Operating Technician Journeyperson Max (after training program completion) $3,954.31 Bi-weekly
