BACKGROUND:
SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 33 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 87,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Director Human Resources, the Human Resource Consultant provides guidance and advice on human resource functions as well as strategic and timely support in day-to-day human resource activities, this includes management support, performance management, attendance management, progressive discipline, recruitment, and selection. 
 
The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of human resource management, with a strong background in consulting and hands-on experience in resolving HR issues. We are looking for strategic thinkers and problem-solvers who excel in communication and have a track record of maximizing HR value.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Advise leadership on the administration and appropriate application of HR policies, procedures, and standards as well as applicable legislation/regulations.
  • Act as an internal consultant by analyzing and recommending solutions to a variety of human resources and employee relations issues.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to managers/supervisors in resolving people issues and people management practices.
  • Handles workplace accommodation matters and return to work programs.
  • Provide counseling to employees regarding employment and benefits issues related to, for example, Disability and Rehabilitation, leave of absence, etc.
  • Provide information and advice on promotions, transfers, employee career advancement or enrichment, etc.
  • Track benefits, probationary periods, doctor’s notes, work restrictions, sick time and make necessary changes/amendments when required.
  • Provide managers/supervisors with staff probationary dates, anniversary dates and any salary increase information.
  • Maintain and update manual and computerized filing and registration systems, Human Resource Management System (HRMS), and compile and prepare reports and documents relating to human resources activities.
  • Conduct exit interviews.
  • Provide back-up support to the HR Team
 
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
·         Undergraduate degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Commerce or equivalent combination of experience and education
·         Minimum of 5 - 7 years’ experience performing a broad range of Human Resource functions including, employee relations, labor relations, and staffing
·         Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation will be considered an asset.
·         Current knowledge of standards and legislation as they relate to human resource management.
·         Experience resolving complex employee relations issues, working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines, including compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, employee relations, diversity, performance management.
·         Fluency in payroll and benefits plans and administration. 
·         Experience in the administration of workplace safety and health programs and compliance.
·         Strong understanding of HRMS, an ability to run reports and navigate systems.
·         An ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality.
·         Strong organizational skills with the ability to proactively organize and manage a high volume of time sensitive tasks and work. 
·         Exemplary interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
·         Excellent mentoring and relationship building skills. 
·         Functions effectively as a team member, demonstrating emotional stability and objectivity when dealing with challenging/changing work environments.
·         Ability to speak Dakota or Anishinaabe language an asset.
 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
·         Must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
