We are seeking a Technical Officer in Station Design Department. Under the general direction of the Apparatus, Quality Control Engineer Section Head, you will act as a subject matter expert, providing specification, procurement, contract management, quality control, and technical expertise for power transformers and other complex electrical apparatus for Stations.
Responsibilities:
- Take a lead role in the specification, procurement, and application of high voltage AC substation, HVDC Converter Station, and Generating Station power transformers, and other complex station apparatus including:
- Develop and maintain specifications in accordance with CSA, ANSI/IEEE, and IEC standards while utilizing best utility practices in conjunction with manufacturers.
- Analyze technical and commercial proposals and prepare contracts and Executive Recommendations in conjunction with Supply Chain Management and Legal Departments.
- Provide direction, review, and approve manufacturers' drawings and instruction manuals, ensuring each design is in accordance with the specified industry standards and conforms to the special technical requirements in the Manitoba Hydro specification.
- Define and witness testing at manufacturing plants both inside and outside Canada. Review and recommend approval of test reports and approve final release of equipment. Perform manufacturing plant inspections and evaluations. - Provide authoritative and expert-level guidance on power transformers and other complex station apparatus by:
- Lead technical application activities, providing strategic direction, technical support, and guidance to planning, design, and operation stakeholders.
- Provide guidance on conceptual plans regarding relevant technical matters.
- Support Technical staff in the detailed review of apparatus drawings, manuals, and test reports for completeness and accuracy.
- Advise planning and design personnel in the development of station layouts, station configuration.
- Provide guidance to Project Managers and others on projects with short lead times or special requirements, including urgent applications or failure investigations.
- Liaise with Consultants performing assigned work.
- Work closely with Maintenance & Operations Engineering Support (MOES) and Asset Management for emergency spares and provide support and guidance on developing forecasts of future requirements.
- Provide expert consultation and training.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations across the organization. - Drive advancement and innovation in technology, standards, and procedures for Manitoba Hydro power transformers and other complex station apparatus by:
- Considering environmental reliability and financial goals.
- Keeping abreast of and leading investigation/adoption of emerging technologies.
- Investigating and recommending solutions for technical problems to Planning and Operations staff.
- Establishing and maintaining industry contacts, including research institutions, manufacturers, and other utilities to exchange knowledge, leverage expertise, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
- A two-year diploma in Electrical Technology from a college or institute of recognized standing and a minimum of five years of experience in the design, testing, and service of power transformers.
OR - Certification at the Technologist level by the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba, plus a minimum of five years of experience in the design, testing, and service of power transformers.
- Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance related to power transformers.
- Demonstrated knowledge of power transformer design, construction, and testing standards and codes.
- Familiarity with electrical utility power systems and procedures used in its operation and maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex engineering details, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work with all Enterprise employees, manufacturers, and consultants in a spirit of cooperation, in accordance with Enterprise Operating Principles.
- Possess a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
- Required to travel by all modes of transportation i.e., air, land, and water.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $42.29-$58.35 Hourly, $81,036.54-$111,819.24 Annually.
