1 FULL TIME POSITION

Background:

Island Lake First Nation Family Services was originally established and operated under the auspices of the Awasis Agency of Northern Manitoba on April 30, 1983. On April 21, 1997, Island Lake First Nation Family Services was incorporated as its own agency.  
Island Lake First Nations Family Services consists of four communities: Garden Hill First Nation, St. Theresa Point First Nation, Wasagamack First Nation, and Red Sucker Lake First Nation with the total population of well over 10,000 people. 

SUMMARY:

This position reports to the Director of Services (South) and provides direction to the team to support youth and young adults up to the age of 26 years old. The program provides services to assist young people to become fully independent. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop criteria on the readiness of young people to live independently.
  • With the assistance of staff contact former children in care who are eligible for post majority services.
  • Work with internal agency staff to provide collaborative programming, addressing immediate, short- and long-term goals.
  • Provide outreach support to promote agency programs and activities that address mental health and addictions, connecting to resources for treatment.
  • In collaboration with Mamow-Kuh-Buh-Thig-Queemin and Mamow Kadoodamin ensure youth and young adults have access to training opportunities, post-secondary education, and work experience to assist them in their independence.
  • Ensure access to Elder Services or therapeutic services to address mental health and substance misuse.
  • Ensure support workers are assigned to assist in supporting their lifelong goals when needed.
  • Ensure young adults are ready to move out of the apartment at age 25 but continue to support them in their own apartment until the age of 26.
  • Assist in the celebration of successes.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSW, post-secondary degree in the Social Sciences or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act and the Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth, and families.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and respect for the customs and traditional philosophy of the Island Lake Region.
  • Working knowledge of addictions, mental health, and trauma informed practice. 
  • Possess a valid MB driver’s license and access to a reliable insured vehicle.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Excel, and Word.
  • The ability to speak Oji-Cree would be an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and Prior Contact Check. 
 

SALARY: Commensurate with education, skills, and experience.
