DUTIES
UCN is seeking Elders to join our casual working pool at The Pas Campus. Elders will serve as cultural advisors, mentors, and spiritual guides; providing critical provision to students and staff while fostering a culture of respect, understanding and reconciliation. Elders will supplement students’ academic and personal growth, guide efforts in reconciliation, and contribute to the overall success of student services initiatives by being an active and integral member of a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and traditions in institutional processes and services. They will conduct their role with full recognition of their status, traditional knowledge and respect of becoming an Elder.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Must be recognized by the Indigenous community as an Elder, with demonstrated experience providing cultural guidance, spiritual support, and traditional teachings
· Minimum of 5 years of experience working with Indigenous students or communities in an educational or support services capacity
· Extensive knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions and contemporary issues affecting Indigenous students, including the understanding of the effects of colonialism, residential schools and intergenerational trauma
· Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to students, particularly Indigenous youth, in a respectful, supportive and culturally appropriate manner · Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and community members
· Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
· Ability to design and facilitate culturally appropriate programs and support service for Indigenous students, incorporating Indigenous perspectives and worldviews
· Ability to navigate sensitive situations and support students through challenges with empathy, wisdom and care
· Deep commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the campus community
· Strong passion for supporting reconciliation efforts and working to create a more inclusive and culturally safe environment for Indigenous students and staff
· Understanding of the importance of addressing the academic, emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs of Indigenous students
ASSETS
· Ability to speak an Indigenous language
· Bachelor of Social Work or Counseling degree/background
