Introduction
The Manitoba Indigenous Reconciliation Secretariat (MIRS) is seeking two individuals fluent in Anishinaabemowin as we establish a first-of-its-kind Indigenous languages translation division at the Manitoba Legislature. The team will translate Hansard and other complex legislative and procedural documents into Anishinaabemowin. Expansion of this project to include additional Indigenous languages is planned.
Due to the differences between Anishinaabe cultures and the legislative culture of government, translating legislative materials into Anishinaabemowin will require the incumbent to exercise active language development skills and consult with language experts across the province and throughout the country. This is about linking a culturally-rich language with a procedurally-focused one and creating translated works that help build the corpus of available materials as we look towards the future, towards artificial intelligence (AI), machine-learning, cultural resurgence, and the intersection of people, language, and culture.
Being able to do this while still working towards deadlines will require significant problem-solving skills to achieve meaningful engagement and discussion of proposed new terminology.
