Introduction
Provincial parks play an important role in the lives of Manitobans. Parks conserve ecosystems and maintain biodiversity, preserve our natural, cultural and heritage resources and offer excellent outdoor recreational and educational opportunities in a natural setting.
Within the Environment and Climate Change, the Parks branch is looking to fill a Gardener position. This is a full time / term position from April to mid October. The work location for this position is Captain William Kennedy House, St. Andrews, MB.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba full stage class 5 driver’s licence.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties assigned to the position including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stretching, climbing, crouching, and kneeling.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and statutory holidays as required.
  • Must be able to work outdoors for extended periods of time under various weather conditions.
Qualifications:
Essential:
  • Relevant work experience as a gardener or a combination of training and related experience may be considered. 
  • Experience supervising staff with the ability to  establish work priorities, quality standards, and resolve work performance issues.
  • Experience operating related grounds-keeping equipment.
  • Expansive knowledge of annual, perennial, shrubs and trees and their horticultural requirements.
  • Knowledge of maintenance requirements for grounds and greenhouses.
Desired:
  • Basic understanding of safe work practices (e.g. WHMIS) is considered an asset.
  • Red Seal Apprentice level 1 or 2 would be an asset.
  • Experience with inground irrigation.
  • Experience in public garden maintenance.
  • Secondary education in a related field (botany, forestry, turf sciences).
Duties:
The Gardener performs and supervises the performance of landscaping and maintenance on the grounds of government owned and leased properties. The Gardener is totally responsible for the landscaping, landscape design and ground maintenance of a provincial heritage property and employee supervision.
