We are seeking a HVDC Design Engineer to work in the Station Design Department. Under the general direction of the Principal HVDC Engineer or delegate, responsible to prepare conceptual and detailed design drawings, programming, procurement and support for complex protection, control and metering systems in HVDC converter stations.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform and/or provide guidance to teams responsible for the scoping, estimating, design, specification, tender analysis, acceptance testing and support commissioning of HVDC systems, controls & protection for the Corporation's HVDC facilities.
  • Provide electrical designs for control, metering and auxiliary systems of new and existing stations, and conduct drawing reviews to ensure completeness prior to design approval.
  • Lead complex electrical material procurements, review and maintain material outline agreements with vendors, prepare specifications, analyze tenders, initiate a recommendation for purchase of materials, and manage contracts. Ensure follow-up with vendors which may include the review and approval of manufacturer's documentation and design, determining and assisting with shop or field tests, and liaison with suppliers as required. Lead or assist in the development and maintenance of section's material and procurement systems and material database.
  • Consult with other design sections, coordinate and design the interface for HVDC systems and controls with protective relays, Remote Terminal Units (RTU) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for the purposes of integrated substation automation design.
  • Consult and coordinate with internal project managers, contract management specialists and stakeholders throughout the corporation and external consultants on project activities to ensure that all share a common understanding of project requirements and deliverables. Review and accept consultant's designs and reports ensuring compliance with project specifications and standards.
  • Provide work guidance and on-site assistance when necessary to construction & commissioning staff in areas of expertise.
  • Meet with manufacturers' representatives, consultants, contractors and Corporation personnel from other divisions as required to satisfy station design requirements.

Qualifications:
  • Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing with a minimum of four years' experience of which two years are directly related to power system stations protection, control, and metering design. HVDC experience is considered a strong asset. 
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
  • Working knowledge of HVDC systems and controls, their interfaces to digital protection relays, control and metering devices, and to the Station Automation System (SAS)/SCADA systems. Demonstrated working knowledge and experience in electro-mechanical, solid state and digital relay technology and applications on AC system protection.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of protection, control and automation circuitry including electromechanical, electronic and microprocessor-based technologies and digital communications as applied to the design of complex protection, control, metering and interlocking schemes associated with high voltage AC distribution, transmission, converter, hydro generation and diesel generating stations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Bulk Electric power systems and procedures used in its operation, maintenance and construction practices related to protection, control and operational metering systems.
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with ability to provide guidance and technical assistance to others.
  • Demonstrated initiative in handling involved and complex technical problems.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current Personal Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
  • Possess a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.

Salary Range 
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the Professional Engineer II classification is $43.44-$59.95 Hourly, $83,247.84-$114,870.60 Annually. The range for the Engineer-in-Training classification is $32.51-$45.74 Hourly, $62,293.92-$87,654.58 Annually.
