We are seeking a permanent Transmission Capability & System Studies Engineer to join our System Performance Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement and maintain Manitoba Hydro's transmission capability posting methodology. This would include but not be limited to:
- Maintenance of Manitoba Hydro's Available Transmission Capability Implementation Document (ATCID).
- Development and maintenance of Manitoba Hydro's Book of Flowgates.
- Monitoring of Flowgate uses using tools such as Parallel Flow Visualization (PFV) and Transmission Loading Relief (TLR).
- Comparing Posting Methodologies with other utilities in the Eastern Interconnection to develop best practices.
- Participate in seams coordination with MISO and other tie line partners.
- Update posting methodology and philosophy to comply with various government directives.
- Periodically evaluate tools used for congestion management to ensure Manitoba Hydro's system and generation priorities are properly modelled. - Perform load flow and transient stability, or other power system studies, to determine and recommend the power transfer limits of existing and proposed interconnections with neighbouring utilities.
- Assist in the formulation of, and recommendations for, operating guidelines defining interchange limits within the Manitoba system.
- Develop, prepare, and performs or directs staff to issue dispatcher daily power flow, temporary operating instructions, and contingency plans to System Control Staff for each operating day to System Control staff, MISO Reliability Coordinator and neighbouring Balancing Authorities and Transmission Operators (IESO, SPC, MPC). This position requires working the occasional Hydro Monday with time off in lieu of.
- Participate in the review and comment on proposed electrical system expansion plans with the view that system operating requirements are satisfied.
- Participate as required on inter-utility study task forces and committees concerned with defining interconnection power transfer limits.
- Prepare formal reports and technical memorandums.
- Participate in the standby rotation providing off-hours support to the control room as needed.
- Contribute to the development of Seasonal and Temporary Operating Guidelines, and Operating Guidelines for System Control Centre.
- Collaborate with other INP engineers to ensure consistency and integration across all operational studies and planning efforts.
Qualifications:
- Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of six years of related experience in power system analysis.
- Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and effectively solve complex problems.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively use computer programs intended for power system simulation.
- Demonstrated ability to develop computer models to analyze power systems.
- Knowledge of transmission system congestion management would be an asset.
- Knowledge of extra provincial transmission operation would be an asset.
- Post graduate degree or graduate courses related to power systems would be an asset.
- Must possess a valid Province of Manitoba driver's licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $47.32-$65.33 Hourly, $90,677.86-$125,192.08 Annually.
