Under the general direction of the Independent Power & Renewable Gas Strategies Section Head, will conduct project evaluations and research supporting and related to grid modernization, customer-owned generation projects, renewable gas proposals and ground source district systems. Will have significant involvement in recommending product offerings and pricing mechanisms considering various factors such as overall supply, customer requirements, market rules, government mandates and interconnection considerations. Will continually improve market research for existing and potential customers, participate in the risk analysis of proposed transactions and support the negotiations of long-term contracts.
Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed product (electricity and renewable gas) evaluations using financial analysis and by applying fundamental economic principles to evaluate opportunities and to develop strategies to strengthen Manitoba Hydro's position in PPA negotiations. This includes analysis of historical, forecast, and futures prices, estimating customers' costs of generation, awareness of Manitoba Hydro's supply, generation, transmission, costs, and domestic rates, understanding implications of government programs, monitoring structural changes to the MISO market, and following developments in the broader energy complex.
- Support the planning, analysis, and implementation of grid modernization initiatives by conducting assessments of emerging technologies, distributed energy resources and advanced grid infrastructure.
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to evaluate product potential, identify opportunities for automation, and contribute to the development of strategies that enhance grid flexibility, reliability and integration of customer owned generation.
- Conduct detailed pricing evaluations for a variety of independent power and renewable gas technologies to support project pricing recommendations and contract negotiations.
- Monitor industry trends for new renewable technologies and work with subject matter experts to develop related strategies to support product offerings.
- For all proposals, document the analysis and present assumptions, risks, risk mitigation strategies and recommendations to management for review.
- Contribute to drafting and review of contracts with respect to electric and gas offerings.
- Develop and update KPIs for Quarterly Business Reviews.
- Prepare information and respond to Information Requests for General Rate Applications.
- Prepare and research information for management and government information requests in a timely manner.
- Participate in various adhoc analyses as required.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including senior leadership, regulatory bodies, and community leaders.
- As part of the Independent Power and Renewable Gas Strategies team, contribute to high level strategy development, proposal development and negotiation strategy development; participate in the enhancement of relationships with existing and potential new customers.
- Keep current on market and energy developments in Canada and the US.
- Research information on the position of utilities and markets by monitoring their business activities; identify and provide an assessment of current and future power requirements of utilities in the US and Canada.
- Represent the Department on internal/external working groups as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, business administration or other relevant discipline from an institute of recognized standing with a minimum of six years of related experience.
OR - An equivalent combination of related education and experience
- Proficiency in detailed Microsoft Excel spreadsheet development.
- An understanding of the operation of Manitoba Hydro's generation system including hydro system capabilities and limitations and Manitoba Hydro's transmission interconnections into the export marketplaces would be an asset.
- Experience conducting detailed project evaluations would be an asset.
- Strategic thinker, problem solver, and results oriented. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Possess a thorough understanding of and demonstrated ability to apply economic and strategic evaluation methods.
- Must be capable of adapting to rapidly changing conditions both within Manitoba Hydro and the energy marketplace.
- Must be prepared for occasional travel outside of the Province of Manitoba for inter-utility and other marketing related meetings and activities.
- Possess a strong but pleasant and tactful personality and have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Possess a high degree of initiative, a demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment, innovative, diplomatic and possess mature judgment.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $47.32-$65.33 Hourly, $90,677.86-$125,192.08 Annually.
