We are seeking a HVDC Design Technical Assistant to join our Station Design Department. Under the limited supervision of the HVDC Design Engineer or delegate, design complex protection, control & metering systems associated with high voltage ac and dc distribution, transmission, converter and diesel generating stations. Provide leadership, direction and assist in the training of junior staff.
Responsibilities:
- Design complex protection, control and metering systems and prepare associated electrical drawings, bills of material, estimates, memos and specifications associated with high voltage ac and dc distribution, transmission, converter and diesel generating stations using information from planning single line diagram, concept and automation reports, and protection design reports.
- Provide leadership, direction and ensure work quality of junior staff on protection, control and metering designs for high voltage ac and dc substations.
- Review, develop and prepare station protection, control and metering standards, processes and procedures.
- Liaise with other design sections, departments and Construction & Commissioning staff as required to ensure designs meet current standards, end user functionality and provide trouble shooting when required.
- Analyze quotations and tenders submitted by suppliers and prepare recommendations to purchase material.
- Perform drawing reviews and provide completely checked drawings prior to approval by the HVDC Design Engineer or delegate.
- Meet with manufacturers' representatives, consultants, contractors and personnel from other sections and departments as required to discuss general design details.
- May assist in the design of logic programs for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and advanced digital metering systems.
- Assist in the preparation of commissioning procedures and field commissioning activities as required for digital control and metering systems to ensure compliance to specifications.
- Assist in the training and development of junior personnel and associated performance reviews.
Qualifications:
- Successful completion of a two year diploma course in Electrical/Electronic/Computer Technology from a recognized technical institute and a minimum of four years of directly related experience including design of protection, control and metering systems for high voltage AC station apparatus and related substation auxiliary systems;
OR - Certification at the Technologist level by the Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba (CTTAM) and a minimum of four years of directly related experience including design of protection, control and metering systems for high voltage AC station apparatus and related substation auxiliary systems.
- Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
- Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Training is required and must be completed prior to transfer date and renewed annually.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with HVDC technology and HVDC controls including both digital and analog systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of synchronous condenser machines.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of protective relaying, control and metering circuitry including electromechanical, electronic and microprocessor-based technologies and digital communications as applied to the design of complex protection, control, metering and interlocking schemes associated with high voltage ac and dc distribution, transmission, converter and diesel generating stations.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of station design to include control building and associated electrical design, panel layout and associated wiring and cabling design practices.
- Working knowledge in the application, programming and testing of IEC1131 compliant Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) using Ladder (LD) and Function Block Diagram (FBD) languages.
- Working knowledge of major apparatus to include application and interface to station control, protection, metering and annunciation systems.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of computer assisted drafting (AutoCAD) and applicable drafting practices and standards.
- Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Working knowledge in construction or maintenance of substation facilities is an asset.
- Possess a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $37.94-$52.52 Hourly, $72,703.54-$100,638.98 Annually.
