OVERVIEW: 
 
Reporting to the Supervisor of Care, the Keepers of Child and Youth Wellness work from a community development perspective to build and maintain working relationships with immediate and extended family members of children and young people supported by Shawenim Abinoojii Inc. to engage family in community-centered care. This position will serve alongside Shawenim Abinoojii services teams by keeping the vision “Culturally healthy children, families, and communities” of Shawenim Abinoojii – to Nurture the Child – through the engagement of our children and youth, and the adults in their lives in activities and planning centered on child and youth wholistic wellness and development.  Regular travel to the eight (8) Southeast communities is a requirement of this position.  This position is required to work days, evenings and weekends as per schedule.  
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Liaise with Program Staff to inform the development of Family Connection and Reunification Action Plans.
  • Collaborate with Children and Youth and their Families, Caregivers and Program Staff through a child-development lens to understand child and youth experiences, strengths, needs and goals.
  • Utilized an informed and strengths-based approach to development knowledge of community family systems.
  • Access or develop family network documents for children and young people served by Shawenim Abinoojii. 

Support family members in taking back their role in nurturing their children.
  • Identify immediate and extended family members at various stages of life who are prepared to participate in the care of children and young people.
  • Connect family members to opportunities to support children and young people as Support Workers, Respite Workers and Caregivers.  
  • Participate in and advise on the Caregiver recruitment and selection process.
  • Work in collaboration with stakeholders to meet the needs of children and youth supported by the organization.
 
Focus on the experience of the child. 
  • Liaise with Family, Caregivers and Program Staff to nurture a child-centered approach.
  • Create opportunities to nurture the wholistic development of children and youth, including their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
  • Support Family and Caregivers in engaging with developmentally appropriate activities to support child and youth well-being.
  • Coach Family and Caregivers in approaches focused on child development, including child-centered play, youth-centered activity, mindfulness, communication and emotional regulation.
  • Participate in the Table for Child and Youth Wellbeing to support service planning that effectively responds to the experiences and needs of children and youth. 
 
Participate in service transformation under the organization’s Strategic Priorities. 
  • Identify and communicate training opportunities with the Training Development Specialist and Program Supervisors.  
  • Identify, explore and recommend programs, services or approaches that build capacity in responding to community child wellbeing. 
  • Assess and adapt their approach on an ongoing basis to ensure support is provided in our Anishinaabe way. 
  • Participate in various community initiatives, with a focus on improving the experiences of First Nations children, youth and families.
  • Complete documentation and reports, as required.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • 2-3 years of direct experience working with children, youth and families.
  • Training and/or professional experience working in child development.
  • Knowledge and experience working with our Southeast First Nations communities.
  • Personal experience successfully supporting the wholistic wellness of children and young people and families. 
  • Strong inter-personal communication skills and able to work as a team.
  • Personable and approachable, with the capacity to build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to apply a strengths-based approach to working with people with diverse life experiences.            
  • Demonstrate knowledge and/or understanding of First Nations perspectives, culture, and philosophies.            
  • Well-developed documentation skills.          
  •  Must maintain a high level of confidentiality.         
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.            
  • Must be resourceful with a high attention to detail.            
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and effectively manage multiple priorities.          
  • Satisfactory child and adult abuse registry checks, criminal record check with vulnerable sector search and Prior Contact Check, required.            
  • Valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle with a satisfactory driver abstract, required.
