We are seeking a HVDC Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Generation Projects Department. Under the general direction of the Automation & Controls Engineering Section Head or delegate, provide technical expertise, perform design & procurement and support construction / commissioning for mechanical systems in High-Voltage DC, Transmission, Distribution, and Thermal Generation facilities.
Responsibilities:
- Assume professional responsibility for the design, assessment, repair, upgrade and other tasks required to manage mechanical assets such as synchronous condensers, pneumatic systems, cranes, valve cooling and heating-ventilation-air-conditioning systems.
- Participate in large project teams and take lead roles on medium complexity projects.
- Participate in scope development and prepare studies, technical specifications, recommendations, design calculations, design packages, estimates, manuals, commissioning procedures and other various Engineering deliverables.
- Apply engineering knowledge and skills to effectively design mechanical assets using demonstrated proficiency in at least the following mechanical engineering theory: turbomachinery synchronous condensers, pneumatic and auxiliary systems related to HVDC Converter Station plant.
- Technical Specification Development, Fatigue Analysis, Machine/Fastener Design, Quality Assurance and Weld Design.
- Provide technical guidance to technical staff within the department, to consultants and contractors and other departments. Liaise with other departments, divisions & business units both technical and non-technical for correlation of design criteria and project requirements.
- Lead the development of engineering drawings prepared by technical assistants, drafters and apply detailed knowledge of drawing best practices and complex geometric dimensions and tolerances.
- Provide technical review of a variety of welding documents such as welding procedure specifications and qualifications.
- Advise external consultants, suppliers, and contractors of Manitoba Hydro design requirements and review their deliverables to ensure they meet design criteria, industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Lead procurement activities including specification buildout, proposal analysis, quotations, and tenders; prepare recommendations to award.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and on-site tests; lead commissioning as required.
- Monitor and control scope, schedule, and budget of assigned design tasks.
Qualifications:
- Graduate in Mechanical Engineering from a University of recognized standing plus a minimum of six years of related experience with two of design or relevant engineering experience with synchronous generators and auxiliary systems.
- Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
- Must obtain and maintain a current Personal Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
- Demonstrated working knowledge and understanding of the operation of Electric Transmission, Distribution, High-Voltage DC Conversion, and Diesel Generation facilities.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of rotating synchronous machines, turbomachinery, and auxiliary systems related to synchronous generators, synchronous condensers, and high-voltage electrical equipment. Experience with hydrogen-cooled machinery will be considered an asset.
- Demonstrated advanced knowledge of industrial mechanical systems including building HVAC, heat recovery systems, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation systems, and hydrogen cooling systems.
- Proven ability to determine design details for major equipment in conjunction with manufacturer's engineers.
- Working knowledge of mechanical engineering design, codes, standards and practices as they pertain to bulk electrical system equipment and associated infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of welding theory and code interpretation.
- Working knowledge of the use and limitations of Autodesk Inventor for both 2D and 3D work, as well as experience interpreting engineering drawings.
- Maintain an understanding of applicable engineering/safety standards and legislation.
- Proven ability to plan and execute design projects and complex procurements.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Capable of communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others and participate on project teams.
- Required to travel by all modes of transportation i.e. air, land and water.
- Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Notes/Comments:
- May be required to work at other locations within the province, and where transportation between these sites may be by small aircraft.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $47.32-$65.33 Hourly, $90,677.86-$125,192.08 Annually.
