Position Summary
The Indian Residential Schools (IRS) Settlement Agreement established the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Worker Program. It now includes the Indian Day School (IDS), Intergenerational, Day Scholars, 60’s Scoop Class Action Settlement agreement. The goal of the program is to ensure eligible former survivors/thrivers of IRS and their families have access to appropriate levels of mental wellness support services that safely address their childhood traumas through education and sharing of cultural values, beliefs, and traditions.

The Land-Based Cultural Support Coordinator plays a key leadership role in planning, coordinating, and delivering holistic, land-based cultural healing programs for youth, families, and community members. Rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems, this position ensures that land-based and cultural initiatives are organized in a way that promotes healing, wellness, and identity restoration.
 
 The Coordinator works closely with other Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners to create opportunities for reconnection to the land, traditional teachings, and ceremony. The position promotes wellness through land-based healing, youth mentorship, and community outreach — nurturing pride, belonging, and cultural strength for all generations.


Key Responsibilities

1. Land-Based and Cultural Programming
• Plan, organize, and oversee delivery of land-based and cultural activities such as hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, food preservation, and medicine picking.
 • Coordinate cultural ceremonies, feasts, and seasonal gatherings in collaboration with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
 • Lead youth-focused learning sessions that integrate cultural teachings, traditional knowledge, and leadership development.
 • Maintain and prepare cultural sites such as lodges, fire areas, sweat lodges, and camp setups.
 • Promote language, traditional songs, and storytelling as core elements of each activity.


2. Healing-Focused Support
• Support healing processes by providing a safe, trauma-informed, and culturally grounded environment.
 • Collaborate with other AHC staff, community Elders, and Knowledge Keepers to offer traditional and land-based healing supports.
 • Help participants navigate emotional, spiritual, and physical healing through connection to land and culture.
 • Model balance, cultural pride, and respect in all interactions.
 • Prepare and assist with various ceremonial preparations and protocols.


3. Youth Engagement and Mentorship
• Develop youth engagement plans that encourage leadership, self-confidence, and responsibility through land-based learning.
 • Mentor youth in traditional harvesting, ceremony participation, and cultural stewardship.
 • Build trusting relationships that empower youth to rediscover their gifts and identity.
 • Foster intergenerational connections between youth, Elders, and community mentors.


4. Community Outreach and Collaboration
• Build and maintain strong partnerships with local schools, organizations, and community members to expand land-based opportunities.
 • Coordinate community events, awareness campaigns, and outreach activities that promote healing and cultural revitalization.
 • Represent the organization at meetings, gatherings, and public events in a positive and professional manner.
 • Encourage volunteer and family participation to strengthen community involvement and shared responsibility.


5. Program Coordination and Administration
• Manage logistics for land-based activities, including scheduling, budgeting, purchasing, and transportation coordination in collaboration with AHC staff.
 • Maintain records of participants, attendance, and program outcomes for evaluation and reporting.
 • Ensure safety measures and risk assessments are in place for all activities.
 • Support staff and volunteers with guidance, mentorship, and ongoing communication.
 • Prepare summaries and reports for funders, partners, and leadership as needed.


Qualifications
• Deep understanding of First Nation/Indigenous culture, land-based practices, and traditional teachings.
 • Experience coordinating programs or community initiatives involving youth, healing, or cultural components.
 • Strong organizational and leadership skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.
 • Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally safe practices.
 • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and conditions.
 • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
 • CPR/First Aid and other safety certifications are assets.
 • Clear Criminal Record, Vulnerable Sector, and Child Abuse Registry checks required.

 • Involves travel to remote or traditional sites.
