Introduction
The Manitoba Wildfire Service is seeking highly motivated individuals interested in filling the role of Initial Attack Crew Leader (Fire Ranger 3) at various locations in the Western Region. The Manitoba Government has a comprehensive benefits package, which includes extended health care, heatlth spending account, dental care, long term disability insurance, group life insurance, and a defined pension plan.
Duties:
Under the direction of the Area Fire Manager, Helitac Officer (FR4), or District Duty Officer the incumbent will be responsible for the daily direct supervision and leadership of a 4-5 person Initial Attack forest fire suppression crew. Duties include:
Organize, direct and supervise crew members during wildfire suppression and daily work activities to ensure the safe, efficient and effective application of fire suppression strategies and safe work practices.
Ensure compliance with mandatory daily fitness guidelines, Wildfire Service Operational Guidelines, Wildfire Service Safe Work Procedures, and Workplace Safety & Health Regulations.
Ensure the proper use, maintenance and inventory control of equipment and tools assigned to the crew members.
Participate and assist in the delivery of public relations & fire prevention initiatives and in the development and delivery of training programs for fire crews or junior staff.
Participate in provincial, inter-provincial and international deployment as required.Maintain detailed records of crew operations and staffing.
Perform other duties as assigned, including the supervision of district work projects.
Qualifications:
Essential:
Experience as a member of an Initial Attack Crew conducting initial attack, sustained action, and mop-up fire suppression on a wide range of wildfire situations or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience using and maintaining all of the standard firefighting hand tools and equipment, e.g. shovel, axe, pulaski, Mark 3 fire pump, chainsaw.
Experience and knowledge with the principles of fire weather, fire behaviour and fire line safety to ensure the safe, efficient and effective application of fire suppression strategies.
Experience working with various aircraft utilized in forest fire suppression activities and knowledge of their individual roles and capabilities, e.g. light and medium helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, and water bombers.
Strong verbal communication skills.
Desired:
Supervisor experience including training, guidance, direction and performance management.
Experience and knowledge of Workplace Safety and Health Regulations, including fire line safety.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5F driver’s licence or equivalent (an intermediate stage Manitoba Class 5 driver's licence is acceptable on a temporary basis. Candidates are expected to attain and maintain a full stage Class 5 driver's licence on a permanent basis). Applicant will be required to provide a Drivers in Force letter or provincial equivalent before date of hire.
Must be willing and able to travel throughout the province and spend extended periods in the outdoors including residing in remote fire camps, tents or other locations.
Must be willing and physically capable to perform the duties required of the position such as wildfire suppression action, operation of chainsaws, lifting up to 65lbs, carrying equipment through rough terrain and working extended periods under adverse weather conditions.
Must complete and pass the Canadian Physical Performance Exchange Standard for Type 1 Wildland Fire Fighters (WIX-FIT) fitness test and meet the Manitoba agency performance standard of 17 minutes and 15 seconds.
Will be required to possess and maintain current first aid and CPR certification by a date acceptable to the employer.
Must be willing and able to be deployed and travel by means of aircraft (helicopter & plane), boat or vehicle (such as ATV, UTV, trucks) for fire action and other assignments.
Must be willing and able to travel throughout the province and spend extended periods in the outdoors including residing in remote fire camps, tents or other locations.
Must be willing and able to work weekends, overtime and be deployed provincially, inter-provincially or internationally, as/when required.
