Position Overview:
We are seeking candidates interested in training for a career as a Natural Gas Service Person Trainee. All training is fully paid.
This 4-year fully paid apprenticeship program includes on-the-job training and 12 weeks of competency-based classroom training that prepares you for a career as a Natural Gas Service Person.
Natural Gas Service Persons monitor and maintain natural gas distribution systems, repair natural gas lines and respond to natural gas and carbon monoxide emergencies. These emergencies can include damaged gas lines, fires, gas odor investigations and carbon monoxide investigations. Natural Gas Service Persons also service and inspect natural gas appliances.
Responsibilities:
As a Natural Gas Service Person Trainee, you will:
- Conduct odorant tests, cathodic reads and regulator station inspections.
- Repair and make alterations to the natural gas distribution system including above and below grade piping and equipment.
- Replace natural gas meters and regulators and repair or install service lines.
- Respond to natural gas related emergencies such as damaged gas lines, gas odor calls, fire calls and Carbon Monoxide calls.
- Inspect all new and replacement gas appliances.
- Repair and adjust furnaces, boilers, water heaters and residential cooking appliances.
- As part of your training, you will be required to obtain a Utility D Gas Fitter's Licence by successfully completing the Inspection and Technical Services Manitoba Utility D Gas Fitter's exam. Natural Gas Service Persons need to continuously upgrade their skills and knowledge to keep pace with the ongoing development of new technology in the natural gas industry.
Trainees must demonstrate a strong commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and are expected to follow all safety protocols and Safe Work Procedures.
Qualifications:
- High school graduate with a minimum of the following specific credits: Mathematics 40S (Applied or Pre Calculus); Physics 30S; and English 40
OR - Possess a Class "A" or "B" Gasfitter's licence issued by the Province of Manitoba certifying qualifications (or equivalent Provincial certification).
- Possess a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence (intermediate or full)
- It is Manitoba Hydro's preference that candidates reside within the Winnipeg headquarters zone or within 20 minutes driving distance from your assembly point. The Winnipeg headquarters zone is defined as the City of Winnipeg and 5 km outside of the perimeter.
- Note: During periods of standby, you must reside within the defined Winnipeg headquarters zone. - Meet the challenges of physically demanding work in all types of weather.
- Capable of working at heights on ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, roof tops and mechanical lifts.
- Be prepared to work with natural gas and mechanical and electrical systems while adhering to established safety procedures.
- Be prepared to work in confined spaces with hazardous products while conforming to established safety procedures.
- Be prepared to work various shifts which may include days, evenings, weekends, nights, standby and/or statutory holidays once you are fully qualified to do so.
- Be prepared to interact with customers as required.
- Other relevant trades designations may be considered. (e.g. plumber)

As part of the selection process, candidates will be required to write standardized aptitude tests that assess how well a candidate's abilities match the requirements of the job. Candidates will also participate a 1-day pre-employment skills assessment and trade orientation session, which provides candidates with the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to follow instruction and transfer knowledge. It also gives the evaluation group an opportunity to see you perform hands-on natural gas service person trainee related tasks. Candidates selected for this session will be required to provide a current driver's abstract.

Salary Range
Natural Gas Service Person Trainee: $24.85-$33.69 Hourly, $47,619.78-$64,559.82 Annually
Natural Gas Service Person: $38.20-$49.12 Hourly, $73,193.90-$94,121.56 Annually
