IRS & IDS Cultural Support Worker/Knowledge Keeper

Purpose

Provide flexible "front-line" services to Indian Residential Schools (IRS) and Indian Day School (IDS) Survivors and their families in Manitoba that are involved in accessing the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA), Indian Day School Settlement, and specifically cultural support services through the IRS Resolution Health Support Program (IRSRHSP).
 

The Indian Residential Schools (IRS) settlement agreement established the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Worker Program. It now includes the Indian Day School (IDS) Class Action Settlement agreement. The goal of the program is to ensure eligible former IRS and IDS former students and their families have access to appropriate levels of mental wellness support services that safely address their childhood traumas related to their experiences at IRS and IDS through education and sharing of cultural values, beliefs, and traditions.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Develop and facilitate activities to encourage a positive impact on physical, mental,

spiritual and emotional well-being and health;

·       Provide referrals and coordinate cultural support services such as ceremonies, prayers, and traditional

healing to former (IRS/IDS) Students and their families when and where required, paying particular attention to individuals in crisis;

·       Facilitate traditional teachings and healing/debriefing circles, with priority to services

and supports for IRS/IDS survivors and their families;

·       Ensure former (IRS/IDS) students receive health support services as requested by

referring them to the appropriate Health Canada (IRS/IDS) Regional Coordinator for a

determination of eligibility; 

·       Monitor ongoing contact and interaction with former residential school students on a

regular basis;

·       Liaise with member First Nations communities to promote cultural resources.

·       Refer claimants to appropriate resources that are established in the community-based

healing and wellness programming (NNADAP, mental health, treatment centers, etc.);

·       Build networks and effectively communicate with different stakeholders including

Indigenous community members/governments, provincial and federal governments,

and other relevant agencies promoting awareness of IRS issues; 

·       Co-facilitate related health and wellness workshops;

·       Acts as a lead/co-lead to provide direction, guide, and facilitate group presentations;

·       Prepare activity reports and annual summary reports including briefing notes and

literature reviews for the current year, or other reports as required;

·       Coordinate and participate in all wellness annual conferences and gatherings.


QUALIFICATIONS

·       Degree or diploma in social services, social work, native studies (or) equivalent experience;

·       Must be double vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination;

·       Knowledge of the legacy of residential schools, colonization, assimilation, and the

impacts of such history on the overall health of individuals;

·       Knowledge of Truth and Reconciliation and the 94 Calls to Action;

·       Connections/networking with Indigenous organizations and communities (e.g. access

·       to elders/knowledge keepers);

·       Able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment with respect, professionalism,

cooperation, sensitivity, and cultural awareness;

·       Able to take initiative and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills;

·       Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing;

·       Demonstrated highly effective project management, prioritization, multi-tasking, and time management skills to meet deadlines;

·       Efficient in the operation of a personal computer, including the use of word processing software and spreadsheet applications, and other general office equipment.

·       Possess a current province of Manitoba driver’s license and a suitable vehicle for work-related transportation;

·       Proven team player, yet able to work independently;

·       Ability to travel extensively in the Province of Manitoba and nationally when required and must be willing to work a flexible schedule.

·       Demonstrated proficiency in conducting individual/group counselling;

·       Ability to communicate in a First Nations language(s) and/or previous exposure to First

Nations communities and cultures, an asset;

·       Knowledge and experience in Anishinaabe cultural teachings and ceremonies;

·       Connections to Anishinaabe Knowledge Keepers, spiritual elders, and other cultural

resources;

·       Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Certification, an asset;

·       Critical Incident Stress Management Certification, an asset;

·       Mental Health First Aid Certificate, an asset;

·       First Aid/CPR Certificate, an asset. 

·       Be substance-free!

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

·       Able to lift at least 50 lbs. and travel by all forms throughout Manitoba and nationally. Overnight may be a requirement on occasion.

·       This position requires: Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Search, and a Child & Adult Abuse Registry

·       Check and in compliance with Anish Corporation COVID Policy with proof of double vaccination.
