Introduction
The Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) is an independent office of Legal Aid Manitoba that provides legal services to eligible groups and individuals on public interest law test cases. Legal services provided include legal representation both in civil litigation and administrative contexts, as well as legal opinions and advice.
PILC practices in a wide variety of areas, always guided by its mission to serve communities who face barriers to inclusion in Manitoba and who are too often silenced in legal and public policy decision making processes. PILC’s main areas of practice include, but are not limited to:
access to essential government services,
human rights and constitutional law,
consumer rights,
law relating to Indigenous people and
environmental law.
PILC counsel regularly appear at all levels of the court system, including the Court of King's Bench, Manitoba Court of Appeal, Federal Court of Canada and Supreme Court of Canada, as well as before numerous boards and tribunals. PILC is committed to superior research, writing and advocacy with an interdisciplinary and multi-tool approach to advocacy, simultaneously engaging in litigation, public awareness campaigns, engagements with individuals and experts, media appearances, and/or legal research.
Duties:
The successful candidate will work in a team environment representing groups or individuals on matters of broad public interest. Legal services include litigation before administrative tribunals and all levels of court, research and preparation of legal opinions. This position will manage a caseload in an efficient and effective manner, keep up-to-date, accurate time and billing records, meet billing targets as established by Management, assist other lawyers in their office as a member of the office's legal team, as well as performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Essential:
Experience litigating in the field of civil or administrative law.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with the public, clients, other legal counsel and government agencies.
Demonstrated interest in public interest issues.

Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment on innovative and legally complex matters.
Ability to effectively meet critical deadlines and billing targets established by Management.
Ability to maintain accurate and timely electronic recording of case detail and time information.
Ability to use electronic information and document management systems.
Education or knowledge on the effects of colonization on Indigenous People in Canada and the systems in which Indigenous people interact.
Desired:
Experience with research or litigation in the areas of: access to essential government services, human rights and constitutional law, consumer rights, law relating to Indigenous people or environmental law.
Experience in employing social science, science and traditional knowledge in legal proceedings.
Experience with or willingness to engage in multi-tool approach to advocacy, including litigation, public awareness campaigns, engagements with individuals and experts, media appearances, and/or legal research.
