Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Grand Rapids Fish Hatchery Supervisor or delegate, and scientific and aquaculture program direction from the Generation Environmental Services Department, is responsible for the day-to-day operation and direction of the Grand Rapids Fish Hatchery (GRFH) including: fish production, hatchery environment, research support and operational administration of Manitoba Hydro's fish culture program and implementation of community outreach. 

The position also provides support to various groups in the implementation of requested fish culture services as well as environmental programs and activities relating to aquatic resources and impacts associated with existing and future power production facilities. This is a term position for a duration of approximately 18-24 months.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Hatchery Supervisor in the production of fish at GRFH. Includes day to day assessment and monitoring of fish health; instruction, direction and participation in egg collection, fish production and stocking activities; assessment and monitoring of hatchery environmental conditions; and direction in operation and maintenance of fish production infrastructure. 
  • Carry-out the routine operation and maintenance functions of the Grand Rapids Fish Hatchery. These include, but are not limited to: delegating duties and prioritizing work assignments to staff, coaching staff, coordinating logistics related to fish production and stocking activities, data collection and management, weekly shift reports, implementing QA/QC controls. Assume leadership of the fish hatchery in the absence of the Hatchery Supervisor. 
  • Provide direction and training of staff, ensuring both policy and procedures are followed. Establish effective work systems ensuring compliance with good fish husbandry and safe work methods. Participate in individual performance management, including providing input to the creation and implementation of training and development plans and performance evaluations.
  • As assigned by the Hatchery Supervisor, facilitate scientific research and management studies at GRFH related to hatchery operations and fish production for the implementation of approved fisheries.
  • Ensure use of proper experimental design and statistical analysis.
  • Implement and contribute to continuous improvement of fish culture systems and infrastructure. This includes optimization of aquaculture systems, water quality analysis and adjustment, monitoring, and data collection, recording and reporting of all parameters. 
  • Assist in development of, implement and enforce appropriate fish health protection and biosecurity protocols and practices, e.g. sanitation/disinfection programs, to meet regulatory requirements and maintain a disease-free facility.
  • Make standard health assessments and laboratory examinations on all fish stocks on hand and administer treatments when required.
  • Ensure consistent and accurate recording of fish production data such as daily lot histories, monthly weights and measurements, monthly feed consumption, etc. 
  • Contribute to data assembly, oversee data QA/QC and assist with report preparation as per adopted methods and practices. 
  • Assist in development and implementation of education programs and lead tours at the hatchery on conservation aquaculture for external visitors.

Qualifications:
  • Two year diploma in a program related to fisheries or aquaculture plus a minimum of three years of directly related experience.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in fish culture or husbandry would be an asset.
  • Possess advanced knowledge of fish culture collection, hatching, rearing, and releasing. Knowledge of fish culture biology as it relates to development and treatment of fish.
  • Possess a sense of responsibility, independence, initiative and ownership of the activities for which they are responsible.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize and schedule short and long term service strategies, assess priorities and provide leadership, direction and motivation to staff.
  • Ability to delegate work.
  • Possess a scientific approach to work, including neatness, thoroughness and inventiveness with great attention to detail and the ability to maintain a productivity level appropriate for this position.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate projects and lead cross-functional teams, including establishing priorities, communicating goals and ensuring completion of objectives. 
  • Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties of the position, including field work and work in adverse conditions such as noise, heat.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to deal with staff, consumers and government agencies.
  • Conversant with and adhere to Manitoba Hydro Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • Possess a Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence. 

Notes/Comments:
  • Overtime work may be required during busy periods.
  • You will be required to work a modified 8/6 work cycle.

Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $36.39-$53.26 Hourly, $69,725.50-$102,064.04 Annually.
