Introduction
 
The Seniors’ Advocate office is an independent office of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba and is responsible for identifying, reviewing and analyzing systemic problems affecting seniors in Manitoba and making recommendations for positive change. 
 
The Communications Coordinator is responsible for creating and disseminating public facing communications including the organization’s website and social media accounts and reports, liaising with news media, and coordinating the development and dissemination of internal communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Conditions of Employment:

Essential skills/expertise:
  • Post secondary degree of diploma in communications or related field or a combination of relevant education and experience 
  • Experience in a communications role that includes media relations, writing, editing, creating and publishing
  • Demonstrated ability to perform applied research and apply findings to communications materials 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to present complex material in accessible formats
  • Political acumen with extensive experience developing and editing communication materials containing sensitive information 
  • Demonstrated experience providing strategic advice to senior leaders on communication content, modes, methods, and measures
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to build effective working relationships with stakeholders, including news media, the general public, government officials, legislative officers, educational institutions, and community groups
  • Proven experience working within and contributing to a respectful and inclusive workplace that includes principles of anti-oppression, and truth and reconciliation 
  • Excellent organizational, time management skills, and the ability to make independent sound decisions and effectively solve problems while maintaining strict confidentiality.  
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as a part of a team. 
  • Demonstrated ability managing many projects and files simultaneously 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and/or other communications software 
  • Experience in accessible website and social media development and monitoring 
 
Desired skills/expertise:
  • The ability to speak and write in French
 
Duties: 
Reporting to the Seniors’ Advocate, the Communications Coordinator is an integral part of the leadership team, tasked with leading external and internal communications.  This role acts as the primary contact for all communications and public relations matters. The incumbent will be responsible for researching, creating, developing, monitoring, and updating social media and website content. The Communications Coordinator will also write content for public announcements, public facing documents and information about the Seniors’ Advocate office and mandate, and internal Seniors’ Advocate material.
