An eligibility list may be created for similar positions throughout the Northern and Western Wildfire Region (The Pas, Snow Lake, Paint Lake) and will remain in effect for 6 months.
Overtime is paid at 1.5x after an 8 hour shift and 2x when working a day of rest. Bunkhouse accommodations may be provided. Meal charges may apply
Introduction
Under the direction of the Area Fire Manager, the Helitac Officer is responsible for the management and organization of the Initial Attack Fire base providing leadership and supervision to Initial Attack Crews on a daily basis. The Helitac Officer is responsible for initial attack of wildfires, coordinates, implements and directs wildfire suppression strategies, tactics, training and participates in both provincial and national deployments as and when required.
Duties:
Reporting to the Area Fire Manager (AFM) or designate will organize and co-manage the day to day activities and operation of the Initial Attack Fire base. This includes the direct supervision of assigned Initial Attack (IA) Crews.
Responsible for ensuring the readiness of the IA Crews of the Helitac operation, including personnel, equipment and aircraft resources.
Responsible for ensuring that the Wildfire Program infrastructure is maintained and repaired.
Provides on-board, on-site supervision and guidance for IA Crews and helicopter flight Crews.
Plans, organizes and ensures that all members of the IA and Emergency Fire Fighters (EFF) are trained within the provincial and national standards.
May act as Initial Attack Incident Commander on forest fires.
Supervise the maintenance of Fire suppression equipment and ensures equipment is maintained to provincial standards.
Maintains records, completes daily Fire regional operating plan, completes Initial Attack Fire reports and prepares other Program reports as required.
Responsible for work performance of Wildfire personnel.
Ensure staff and the workplace is compliant with all workplace safety and health legislation and practices.
Supervise district work and/or construction projects as required.
Make recommendations regarding wildfire management objectives in area and region.
Acts as a liaison between aircraft contractors and Manitoba Wildfire Service
Perform other duties as assigned by the AFM and /or Regional Duty Officer.
Qualifications:
Essential:
Experience as a Crew Leader on an Initial Attack Crew.
Experience interpreting fire weather, fire behaviour, and implementing wildfire suppression tactics.
Experience in fire equipment maintenance and usage.
Supervisory experience providing training, guidance and performance management.
Knowledge of fire fighting aircraft and their capabilities.
Leadership skills.
Strong Verbal communication skills.
Strong Written communication skills.
Desired:
Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation and procedures.
Knowledge of fire program policy and procedures, operational guidelines and administration practices.
Completion of Crew Leader S200 training and any other wildfire suppression courses.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba class 5F driver's licence or equivalent.
Must be physically capable of performing the duties required of the job including lifting up to 60 lbs.
Must be willing and able to work weekends, and be deployed provincially, inter-provincially or internationally.
Must maintain current First Aid/CPR certification.
