Position: Addictions Counselor

This is a full-time permanent position, Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work could be required.
Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Operations Manager, and in accordance with the Indigenous Women’s Healing Centre's philosophy, goals, service policies and standards the Addictions Counselor is responsible for providing supports and programming for the residents of North Star Lodge who are dealing with the vicious cycle of addiction, due to intergenerational family dysfunction, residential school impacts, and trauma related issues. All support and programming will guide the residents in their efforts to successfully re-unify their family and reintegrate back into the community.
Experience:
· Bachelor of Social Work/Degree in Social Sciences and at least two years' experience working with Indigenous and/or marginalized populations is preferred. The Indigenous Women’s Healing Centre reserves the right to consider any combination of work and life experience deemed acceptable to fulfill the role.
· Comprehensive knowledge, experience and skills using trauma informed counseling methodologies.
· Knowledge and understanding of issues around family violence, child welfare, and criminal justice as it pertains to Indigenous women and children.
· Awareness of the effects that intergenerational trauma has on the Indigenous population, specifically on women and children.
· A deep knowledge and respect for Indigenous culture and traditions and Indigenous
women's issues is required.
Skills:
· Ability to speak an Indigenous language is a definite asset.
· Must have developed skills in group presentation/facilitation.
· Must have the ability to maintain professional boundaries with the residents.
· Must have the ability to understand the dynamics of trauma-induced behavior and assess their needs and risks.
· The skills to counsel residents to form effective relationships, encourage two-way communication and gain trust.
· The skills to understand the use of authority in supervision and to intervene effectively in crisis situations.
· Must have the ability to assist residents in identifying and solving the practical problems involved in their successful reintegration into the community.
· Must be able to handle stressful situations in an effective, deescalating manner.
Qualifications:
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
· Ability to relate to and understand the diversity of the Indigenous community, historical and contemporary issues, knowledge of Indigenous customs, values, beliefs and traditions.
· Must have the ability to understand the dynamics of behavior of those who are battling addiction and domestic violence situations - assess their needs and risks.
· Current CPR/First Aid training certificate, Child Abuse Registry and Criminal
· Records Check are required (or willing to obtain).
· Must have a valid Manitoba Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
All Indigenous Women's Healing Centre Employees:
· Must maintain professional boundaries with the residents.
· Must refrain from sharing personal life stories/experiences with residents.
· Must follow the confidentiality policy.
· Are always expected to build trusting relationships with residents and their children and to model appropriate behaviors.
· Must ensure that child safety is paramount consideration in all services and supports provided.
· Are expected to work with residents in a manner that is non-judgmental, accepting, and respectful of differing values, ideas and beliefs.
