Position Overview:
We are seeking a permanent Engineering Technician to join our Generation Operations and Maintenance Business Support Department in Gillam, Manitoba. 
Under the general direction of the Generation Support Section Head, the position will be required to undertake inspection, instrumentation, and surveys related to dykes, dams, weirs, diversion channels and other civil infrastructure in support of Manitoba Hydro operations in the Gillam region. The position will also provide periodic support for activities within the Public Water Safety around Dams (PWSD) and Vegetation Management (VM) programs as well as completing maintenance activities often through management of contractors.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform various types of surveys of earthwork, concrete, steel structures and other infrastructure using GPS, total station, and rod/level.
  • Perform electronic data collection to monitor seepage from earth fill dams, uplift pressures on concrete structures and weather warning systems on forebays to manage dam safety risks.
  • Perform maintenance, upkeep and storage of section equipment assets such as vehicles, power tools, hand tools.
  • Perform various initiatives such as instrumentation monitoring programs, dyke and dam inspection programs, and safety related programs.
  • Make field trips as required to take measurements and gather information required to facilitate project cost estimates, drawings and justifications, and to liaise with site staff, design groups, consultants, suppliers and contractors to investigate specific problems, and to carry out inspection at supplier's plant and at the construction site.
  • Administer and direct contracts pertaining to repairs of civil structures, in conjunction with other section staff or departments.
  • Provide technical guidance and engineering support to site staff and summer/co-op students.
  • Provide functional supervision and direction to contractors and Manitoba Hydro's site staff performing civil work.
  • Prepare cost estimates, specifications, requests for quotation, tender analysis and award recommendations.
  • Ensure that technical standards for field inspection, instrumentation and quality control testing are maintained. Contribute to the technical content of concrete and earthworks surveillance reports. 
  • Liaise with other departments and external agencies/suppliers to facilitate their assistance and cooperation in carrying out field activities.

Qualifications:
  • A two-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized technical institute with a minimum of three years related experience and must be eligible for and shall maintain registration as a Certified Engineering Technologist with CTTAM;
    OR
  • Certification by CTTAM at the Civil Technologist level plus a minimum of three years of directly related experience.
  • Sound knowledge of earthworks instrumentation and instrumentation equipment including its operation and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of survey techniques including use of a Total Station, GPS, and Rod/Level.
  • Knowledge of construction procedures and techniques related to buildings and large civil structures.
  • A broad technical background pertaining to all aspects of civil engineering (architectural, structural, geotechnical, hydro technical, municipal), and a basic knowledge of other engineering disciplines would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management practices and ability in planning, organizing and controlling activities of various concurrent work assignments within the area of responsibility.
  • Self-motivated with a desire to work in a team environment and cooperate with corporate employees, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong software skills in standard Microsoft applications and a working knowledge/ability in computer aided drafting.  
  • Working knowledge of Corporation policies, procedures, and regulations and an appreciation of external environmental and safety regulations.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence.

Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $39.65-$58.34 Hourly, $75,976.94-$111,800.52 Annually.
