Position Overview
The ASL/English Interpreter’s primary responsibility is to provide high quality professional interpretation for hearing and Deaf or hard of hearing individuals in the workplace environment, classrooms, schools, and First Nations communities. The ASL/English Interpreter is fluent in both American Sign Language and spoken English and provides simultaneous, consecutive, and educational interpreting services.

Qualifications, Education and Experience
  • Graduate from an accredited post-secondary American Sign Language (ASL) / English Interpreter Program
  • Must be a member in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreter (CASLI), formerly Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC)
  • Fluency in ASL and English
  • Experience in interpreting between American Sign Language (ASL) and English
  • Ability to maintain confidentially of sensitive information
  • Strong written and English oral communication skills
  • Ability to relate to and communicate with children, parents/caregivers, and other professionals
  • Awareness of Deaf culture and supports for students and staff
  • Ability to develop, plan and prepare ASL teaching materials for individuals and groups with a team
  • Appreciation and respect for First Nations self-determination and education reform strategies
  • Experience working with children in school settings is an asset
  • Experience using technology such as Microsoft 365 and Teams, Word, Outlook, Webinars, Zoom, Adobe Pro, videoconferencing platforms, iMovie, editing, captioning and design tools an asset
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
  • Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector and Child Abuse Registry Check
