Position Overview:
We are seeking Diesel Trades Trainees to be part of our Transmission Stations Operations & Maintenance team in Thompson, Manitoba. This is a permanent position with full time hours. As a Diesel Trades Trainee, you will be responsible for the installation, commissioning, servicing and the repair of diesel generators and associated equipment used to generate electrical energy for critical services throughout the Province of Manitoba. You will be paid throughout the apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities:
Under the direction of a Senior Diesel Technician, Diesel Technician or Journeyperson will receive on-the-job training in basic skills in heavy duty equipment maintenance and repair work leading toward Journeyperson status.  Will install, commission, service and repair diesel generators and associated equipment used to generate electrical energy for prime or standby power for critical services located throughout the province of Manitoba. 
  • Assist Diesel Technicians and Journeypersons to:
    - Plan and organize the installation, inspection, overhaul, commissioning and maintenance of Diesel Generators and associated equipment and the maintenance of standby generators for emergency power and microwave standby diesel sets.
    - Operate Diesel Generating Stations under emergency conditions.
  • Comply fully with all safety procedures and regulations as well as Corporate, Legislative and regulatory environmental requirements.
  • Handling of fuel oil, lube oil and other supplies for Diesel Generating Stations, including spill response and clean up. 
  • Fabricate and shape parts, etc., using special precision tools. May be required to perform welding.
  • Required to operate motor boats, snowmobiles, ATV's and skid steer loader at remote Diesel Stations.

Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent;
  • Currently registered in the 4-year Manitoba Provincial Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Truck and Transport Mechanic apprenticeship program;
    OR
  • Completion of an accredited program in Heavy Duty Equipment or Truck and Transport Mechanic through a participating training institution as identified by Apprenticeship Manitoba and eligible for registration in the 4-year
  • Manitoba Provincial Heavy Duty Equipment Tech or Truck and Transport Mechanic Apprenticeship program.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Training is required and must be completed prior to transfer date and renewed annually.
  • Required to have a mechanical aptitude to satisfy all requirements of the position.
  • Capable of communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Physically capable of performing all the duties of the position.
  • Be willing to acquire an approved set of personal hand tools.
  • Required to travel extensively within the northern areas by all modes of transportation (air, land or water).
  • Possess and maintain a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence with appropriate class.

Notes/Comments:
  • You will be required to be away from your headquarter zone for extended periods of time at various locations throughout the Province. 
  • As a Diesel Trades Trainee, you are required to successfully complete a training program that may include classroom and on-the-job training.

Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $25.08-$33.44 Hourly, $48,062.56-$64,083.76 Annually.
