Position Overview:
Under the general direction of the Distribution Construction Coordinator or a team leader will be responsible for assisting in or completing technical surveying requests from distribution design, construction and various other departments. 

Responsibilities:
  • Provide accurate consultation for existing location and proposed placement of all plant for underground and overhead requests in urban and rural areas (including northern Manitoba).
  • Source all necessary data for assignments such as registered/unregistered plans, Design drawings, eGIS data, orthophotos as well as acquiring data externally liaising with industry contacts verifying the information on all available drawings for correlations, accuracy, completeness and revisions.
  • Manipulate data using software such as Microsurvey, AutoCAD, Trimble Business Center and Excel. Perform coordinate transformations, multiple database integrations creating accurate electronic cadastral framework for RTK GPS and Theodolite field application determining accurate location of hydro plant. Will be required to produce manual curve calculations and coordinate derivations, etc. 
  • Provide simple and complex mathematical consultation and clarification, conduct field surveys and convey preferred alignments and locations of new and relocated hydro plant.
  • Applying current overhead and underground distribution and gas transmission standards and past practice, survey proposed equipment locations advising stakeholders of discrepancies or changes in original design.
  • Accurately reference utility clearances (locates) when determining/providing plant and pole locations, anchors and streetlights. Consult with design and construction staff/personnel relaying necessary changes.
  • Personally locate U/G plant using Radio Detection equipment, as built the locations using GPS or terrestrial means and provide data in various formats for internal and external customers.
  • Assist in establishing, qualifying and maintaining vertical control to ensure the placement of residential underground plant will conform to designated area contours. Liaise and consult with external Engineering firms' personnel to obtain and confirm data.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, industry contacts and property owners regarding equipment and plant location, access, tree trimming and potential concerns.
  • Prepare and maintain clear and concise data files of all aspects of work, maintain electronic and paper construction drawings, as-builts, and prepare field sketches as required electronically and by hand to scale for design staff.
  • Familiar with and adhere to Manitoba Hydro safety manual and other approved policies and procedures.

Qualifications:
  • A diploma in Geomatics Technology from an institute of recognized standing with a minimum of two years' surveying experience.
  • Working knowledge of GIS, "Microsurvey", "AutoCAD", Excel and Trimble Business Center software.
  • Familiar with various horizontal coordinate systems and vertical datums, legal descriptions, titles and plans.
  • Ability to read legal plans, grading drawings, construction drawings and municipal utility plans, and capable of extracting information to ensure the correct placement of overhead and underground plant from electronic and hard copy data.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Trimble RTK G.P.S. and Total Stations.
  • Capable of creating and maintaining databases, asbuilt records, etc., familiar with plotting and preparation of unambiguous sketches and electronic drawings of all field work.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal harmoniously with the other Hydro employees as well as professional representatives and property owners including First Nations residents. Mature in judgment and ability to carry out duties with a minimum of supervision.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude to satisfy all requirements of the position such as light field repairs to ATVs, snowmobiles, trailers etc. in all seasons.
  • Physically capable of performing all duties of the position including extended periods outdoors in all weather conditions, operating atv's, snowmobiles, boats and accessing sites by air.
  • Capable of communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
  • Willing to work anywhere in Manitoba and to be away from home for extended periods of time as required.

Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $36.39-$53.52 Hourly, $69,725.50-$102,560.38 Annually.
