Job Overview
Based in Brandon, MB and reporting to the Director of Conservation (DOC), the Conservation Program Manager (CPM) coordinates MHC’s conservation, restoration, and enhancement delivery programs within the organization both in the field and office.

The primary responsibility of the CPM is to oversee staff and delivery of MHC’s conservation programs, including supervising the management and monitoring of MHC’s growing fee simple and Conservation Agreement land portfolio. Along with the usual administrative responsibilities of a manager, the CPM will work with the MHC leadership team to ensure staff and other branches of MHC are supported in a coordinated and unified manner.

As the Conservation Program Manager, you will:
  • Establish and maintain a supportive and structured work environment for staff to seek and realize the best possible outcomes for themselves and MHC.
  • Lead the preparation and tracking of annual work plans and objectives.
  • Oversee the implementation of MHC’s budgets for conservation delivery programs, land management, and equipment purchase and maintenance.
  • Initiate regular meetings with conservation delivery staff to develop and review regional delivery program strategies, goals, outcomes, and required support. This may include both individual staff and team meetings.
  • Provide updates on the progress of conservation delivery programs to the leadership team to help inform annual objectives.
  • Oversee the development and progression of MHC’s Asset Management portfolio, including but not limited to: Land Management Plans, Baselines Documentation Reports, Rangeland Health Reports, Wetland Function Assessments, Annual Monitoring Surveys and Reports.
  • Implement policy for the management and use of MHC-owned lands and stewardship of MHC’s conservation interests.
  • Provide leadership in the oversight of variances and violations on MHC conservation interests.
  • Ensure MHC Workplace Health and Safety policies and protocols are implemented and followed by staff.
  • Coordinate with the operations team regarding field offices and equipment.
  • Conduct annual reviews of direct reports, provide mentorship and professional development opportunities.
  • Review and approve employee time logs and expense claims.
  • Provide continual support to the DOC and various branches of MHC as required.
  • Coordinate and supervise MHC’s participation at exhibitions, tradeshows, conferences and tours of MHC projects.
  • Support staff relationships with relevant agriculture commodity groups, municipalities and local community groups.

You and Your Experience:
Required:
  • Post secondary education in a relevant field (resource and/or land management, ecology, or environmental sciences, management). Relevant experience will be considered as well.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in natural resource management, preferably with a focus on habitat and wildlife conservation issues and practices in the agricultural landscape.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment which includes communicating goals and objectives, as well as managing employees effectively and respectfully.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, implementing, and evaluating ecologically based initiatives and conservation activities.
  • Excellent written and oral communications abilities, including experience writing technical reports.
  • Experience working in, and developing, partnership programs and relationships.
  • General understanding of the development and delivery of wildlife habitat conservation programs.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills.
  • Ability to foster productive working relationships.
  • Significant computer experience in Microsoft 365 applications including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, as well as GIS capabilities.
  • Ability to deliver results within tight deadlines.
  • A valid driver’s license and suitable vehicle for work use.

Asset:
  • Experience working with agricultural producers, organizations, and other conservation organizations is a strong asset.
  • Experience in conflict resolution.
  • Experience with outdoor recreational activities.
  • Experience coordinating development of communications products and activities.
  • Second language.
