Position Overview:
We are seeking an Energy & Reservoir Operations Planning Engineer to join the Energy Operations and Water Planning department. Lead engineering and technical staff and engage with internal stakeholders in the role of planning the operation of Manitoba Hydro's energy system consistent with its operating principles.  This includes planning the operation of all resources to meet forecasted demand, including hydraulic control structures, hydroelectric generating stations, thermal generating stations, and wholesale market activities. Responsible for preparation and implementation of the Weekly Resource Plan, forecasts to inform financial hedging activities, and Generation Estimate reports. This is a term opportunity with a duration of approximately 24 months.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and implement the Weekly Resource Plan and issue operating instructions for generating stations and control structures for all of Manitoba Hydro's major reservoirs.
  • Prepare, co-ordinate, and communicate the Weekly Resource Plan through consultation with the System Control Department, Wholesale Power Trading Department, Waterways Approval and Monitoring Department, Indigenous and Community Relations Division, and others within the Corporation. 
  • Ensure operations consistent with operating priorities, including safety, energy security, impact to communities, and economics.
  • Conduct scenario analysis to investigate the impact of different operations strategies to operating priorities and assess tradeoffs.
  • Support responses to management and executive level requests for information regarding operations planning.
  • Monitor hydraulic, hydrologic, and meteorological conditions and prepare water supply and ice condition forecasts.
  • Prepare and calibrate models used in the preparation of the Weekly Resource Plan. 

Qualifications:
  • Must possess a degree in Civil Engineering, from a university of recognized standing, plus a minimum of seven years related experience of which three years are in the area of hydroelectric utility operations and system optimization modelling.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
  • Strong understanding of Manitoba Hydro's system of reservoirs, generating stations, and interconnections would be an asset.
  • Post-graduate training in water resource management would be an asset.  
  • Must have above average computer and mathematical aptitude, with skills in computer modeling and model development, systems techniques, statistical analysis, and scientific computer programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles, exercise judgement, and decision making involving business and financial risks
  • Will be required to travel within and outside of the Province and work outside normal work hours.
  • Must be capable of managing and planning many tasks at a time.
  • Must be willing to enroll in formal training sessions in engineering, computer programming, as required to maintain proficiency.
  • Familiarity with the Manitoba generating system including system operating techniques and practices is an asset.

Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $52.88-$72.45 Hourly, $101,332.40-$138,828.30 Annually.
