Introduction
The Roadway Preservation Technician (RPT) performs responsible technical and engineering related work exercising independence of action while adhering to department standards, specifications, policies and procedures and reports to the Preservation Resource Manager. The RPT may make decisions regarding own priorities and work schedules and may have Lead Hand responsibility for department staff on a project site. The RPT will perform one or more of the following individual functions: High Performance Chip Seal Technician, Micro Surfacing Technician, Pavement Marking Technician, Rout & Seal Technician, Asphalt Mixing Technician, or Project Coordinator.
Duties:
The Roadway Preservation Technician ensures quality in roadway construction by monitoring materials and construction methods and enforcing specifications for the program operations by: • Acts as primary onsite department representative on construction work and private contracts. • Inspects materials to be used for roadway construction and accepts/rejects product(s) based on department standards, specifications and guidelines. • Collaborates with and monitors contractor’s operation on a daily basis to ensure contract specifications (including traffic control, assessment of working days), contract design quantities, and budget parameters are met. The Roadway Preservation Technician may also take on the role as Project Coordinator by monitoring, coordinating, or supervising emergency response projects (i.e., flood, fire events), and ensuring quality of roadway or off-road construction methods are me.
Qualifications:
Essential:
Graduate of Civil Engineering Technology Program or completion of Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure Level 2 Training or a significant combination of related experience within a roadway construction and maintenance environment.
Extensive knowledge of roadway or preservation construction inspection and quality assurance.
Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and courteously with other employees, the general public, contractors, provincial departments, agencies and stakeholders.
Written Communication Skills.
Knowledge in the areas of occupational, safety, health and risk management including policies and procedures.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment including experience working with outside agencies such as contractors, consultants and vendors is required.
Technical knowledge specific to highway preservation treatments.
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).
Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Communication skills to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts.
Desired:
Experience operating equipment requiring class 3 with airbrakes.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Must possess and maintain a valid class 5 driver's licence without restrictions
Must be able work in all weather environments including extreme temperatures in both winter and summer, and around job site hazards including construction equipment, rough terrain, roadway traffic, loud noises, dust, insects, vegetation and with chemicals and fumes
Must be able to travel to work sites within the province by ground, waterways and air, which may include extended working hours or require overnight stays
