BACKGROUND:
SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 33 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 92,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process. 
 
OVERVIEW:
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization will be hiring motivated youth between the ages of 15 and 30 to work in our Winnipeg sub-offices.  Summer Students will work in a variety of departments including the Jordan’s Principle Program, the Communications Department, and the Human Resources Department. The full-time positions are twelve (12) weeks in length, beginning in June and ending in August of 2026. 
 
PROGRAM AND ROLE OVERVIEWS 
 
Jordan’s Principle Program – Administrative Assistant
Our Jordan’s Principle Program assists First Nation children and youth (up to 18 years of age) and their families to access programs, services, and supports to improve health, education, and social outcomes. The Summer Student will assist with intake applications, gathering required documentation, and uploading relevant documents or data into the program database.
 
Human Resources Department – HR Assistant
The Summer Student will support recruitment and administrative functions across the Human Resources Department. Key tasks may include scheduling interviews, screening resumes, and assisting with screening calls. Daily responsibilities will also include filing, updating spreadsheets, and maintaining employee records. They will use tools such as Microsoft Office Suite and Payworks. 
 
Communications Department – Communications Assistant
Our Communications team ensures the perspectives of SCO and its’ member Nations are communicated to First Nation citizens, stakeholders, funders, and the broader community. The Summer Student will assist with a variety of communications tasks, which may include preparing and/or sending weekly social media recap emails and citizen acknowledgements, preparing social media posts/campaigns, attending events to gather information, and supporting website content updates as needed. The ideal candidate will have basic photography/videography experience, the ability to edit audio/video files, and graphic design skills. 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
·         Summer Students will have responsibilities specific to their area of placement (see above) and will have the opportunity to learn about and gain experience in specific fields of interest (Human Resources, Communications, Social Services)

·         In general, students will be responsible to: 

o   Provide administrative and organizational program support

o   Assist in processing or compiling data and program materials

o   Maintain manual and computerized confidential filing systems

o   Adhere to privacy legislation and policies for storing information

o   Other duties as assigned

 
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
·         For the purpose of fulfilling funding requirements, applicants should be between 15 and 30 years of age

·         Previous work experience in an office setting 

·         Demonstrated knowledge of and respect for First Nations cultural practices, traditions, and customs

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills

·         Attentive to detail and have an organized approach

·         Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines

·         Ability to think critically and apply discretion when dealing with confidential or sensitive information

·         Ability to work independently as well as able to contribute to the success of a team

·         Working knowledge of MS Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, and standard office equipment such as printer/fax machine/scanner

·         Some positions may require travel to SCO communities with advance notice

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
·         Previous work experience in a related field 
·         If eligible to drive, a valid class 5 MB driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for business travel
·         Ability to speak/understand Anishinaabe or Dakota languages

 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
·         Current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check for those over the age of eighteen
