Position Overview:
We are seeking a Hydraulic Structures and Dam Safety Engineer to join our Energy Operations & Water Planning Department Under the general direction of the Hydraulic Asset Performance Section Head, will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing hydrotechnical engineering assignments related to dam safety & public safety around dams to facilitate operation, maintenance, rehabilitation, and construction of new and existing hydraulic structures. This will involve communication and coordination with several internal & external customer groups. Area of focus may include operational support, hydraulic structure performance relationships, numerical and physical modeling, dam safety assessments and inspections, public water safety hydraulic assessments, hydraulic performance testing, and miscellaneous hydrotechnical designs and studies. This is a term position with a duration of 12 months.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the execution of the technical portfolios under the Hydraulic Structure Performance and Safe Water Management Programs, including setting team priorities, assigning resources, managing risks, and coordinating work accordingly.
- Lead and coordinate the Hydraulic Structures and Dam Safety team of hydrotechnical experts, and coordinate interactions with internal and external staff and relevant industries/agencies to maintain the required skill set within the section.
- Lead and plan the portfolio of hydrotechnical studies and analyses necessary to fulful section mandates under the corporate Dam Safety and Public Water Safety Around Dams Policies.
- Lead and plan hydrotechnical engineering studies using empirical, numerical, and physical modelling tools as necessary to support all lifecycle stages of projects and make recommendations recognizing relevant aspects such as hydraulic behavior, environmental effects, and constructability.
- Conduct and review hydraulic inspections, prototype testing, and other field visits to evaluate asset performance and risk, including identification and documentation of required operational restrictions and guidance.
- Maintain technical competency and awareness of new developments and applications in the hydrotechnical field of study and incorporate this knowledge in the day-to-day activities.
- Provide direction and/or training for technical staff (e.g., TAs, Junior Engineers, EITs), and support the ongoing development of all team members.
- Provide formal technical reports, technical memoranda, briefing notes, and presentations (internal and external to the corporation) as required.
- Provide project leadership and/or line advocacy for Corporate R&D projects.
Qualifications:
- Graduate in Civil Engineering from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of seven years' related experience in water resource engineering, including hydraulic assets, dam safety, and public safety.
- M.Sc. or higher degree or recognized post-graduate level training in hydraulics or water resources engineering will be an asset.
- Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
- Strong leadership capability, demonstrated ability to direct, lead, support and/or work as part of a team conducting program work and unique studies/projects.
- Strong all-round knowledge and understanding of hydrotechnical engineering, including working experience in hydraulic analysis, design and/or physical model studies.
- Strong analytical abilities, with an aptitude for long- and short-range planning work.
- Advanced experience in the application and use of specialized hydraulic modeling computer software (e.g., HEC-RAS) including GIS based applications.
- Possess initiative and mature judgment with the ability to make and implement sound decisions.
- Must be willing to travel, including by all modes of transportation, i.e. air, land and water.
- Must have completed Standards of Conduct training or be willing to complete within two weeks of start date.
- May be required to work at other locations within the province for brief durations.
- Must have a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $52.88-$72.45 Hourly, $101,332.40-$138,828.30 Annually.
