Position Overview:
The engineering technician reports to the survey supervisor or delegate and performs or coordinates any surveys assigned to the section. This is a term position with an approximate duration of 12 months.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform and oversee complex field surveys while adhering to environmental rules and regulations using total station, robotic total station, 3D laser scanner, bathymetric survey equipment, GPS/GNSS and conventional technology; complex survey calculations and analysis using survey and statistical software and CAD; written and oral reports.
  • Contribute to administrative functions such as safety management; equipment and facility coordination and maintenance; research on technology investment options; section budgeting; project cost control, and; business planning.
  • Support the safety culture of the team by maintaining a safe working environment including performing as "Person in Charge" as defined by workplace safety & health regulations.
  • Assist with quality control and analysis of data sets and produce final report.
  • Establish and maintain high staff performance standards through effective training, coaching and mentorship of junior staff.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, customers, vendors, managers and external stakeholders including First Nations with the intention of promoting the section by building strong relationships and increasing the team's capacity to succeed.

Qualifications:
  • A diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from an institute of recognized standing and a minimum of two years of survey lead experience including strong competency in field logistics and advanced use of conventional and digital theodolites, total stations, robotic total stations, 3D laser scanners, spirit levels and GPS/GNSS equipment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Training is required and must be completed prior to transfer date and renewed annually.
  • Advanced knowledge of survey theory; horizontal coordinate systems and vertical datums; and methods for determining survey accuracy and performing basic adjustments and transformations.
  • Advanced skills in interpreting design drawings and work requests, preparing and assessing accurate field notes, detail sketching and complex survey calculations using manual methods and/or spreadsheets; computer-aided drafting; and survey software, and presenting final data reports in written, tabular and drawing formats.
  • Advanced ability to plan, organize and direct the activities of self and others without supervision.
  • Mature and respectful demeanor including strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences; ability to work independently and with staff at all levels, Indigenous communities, land owners, regulators, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders and participants.
  • Thorough understanding of the workplace health and safety rules, safe work procedures and environmental compliance as related to the job; ability to occasionally perform the duties of "Person in Charge", as defined by workplace safety and health regulations, on routine assignments.
  • Willing and able to travel extensively outside the headquarter zone and spend extended time away from home; to remote, isolated work locations; on rugged terrain; by various modes of off-road, waterborne and air transportation.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties of the position; adequate mechanical and technical aptitude to satisfy all requirements of working with equipment and tools in remote conditions.
  • Willing to further develop technical knowledge and participate in personal development, safety and technical training.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence of an appropriate classification.

Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $36.39-$53.52 Hourly, $69,725.50-$102,560.38 Annually.
