The Building Efficiency Technology Access Centre (BETAC) supports the building industry by helping clients address the challenges of designing and constructing durable, energy-efficient building envelopes, components and assembly in an environment with extreme conditions. Our core purpose is to support the needs of those involved in the design, construction, renovation, commissioning and maintenance of a building’s envelope.
The Building Efficiency Technology Access Centre (BETAC) supports the building industry by helping clients address the challenges of designing and constructing durable, energy-efficient building envelopes, components and assembly in an environment with extreme conditions. Our core purpose is to support the needs of those involved in the design, construction, renovation, commissioning and maintenance of a building’s envelope.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Reporting to the Director, Building Efficiency Technology Access Centre (BETAC), the Research Technologist will leverage expertise in instrumentation and electronic systems to support the Centre’s applied research, technical services, and specialized education and training activities. In this role, the incumbent will be responsible for the setup, calibration, integration, and maintenance of sensors, data acquisition systems, and data loggers used in both field and laboratory environments. This includes supporting the installation and commissioning of instrumentation for measuring thermal performance, air leakage, moisture behavior, and structural characteristics of building envelope assemblies. The incumbent will play a key role in experimental design, ensuring accurate data capture through reliable instrumentation systems, and will be actively involved in field deployment, troubleshooting, and continuous monitoring of sensor networks. Additionally, the incumbent will collect, process, and analyze high-resolution datasets generated from instrumented testing, ensuring data quality and integrity to support research outcomes. The role includes contributing technical insights to funding proposals and research planning, particularly in areas involving instrumentation strategy and data acquisition methodologies.

Working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, the incumbent will engage with research professionals, industry partners, instructors, staff, and students, providing expertise in instrumentation and electronic systems to support innovation in energy-efficient building technologies across BETAC and the Centre for Applied Research in Sustainable Infrastructure (CARSI).
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
- Diploma in Instrumentation or Electronics Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of related field/work experience in the building sciences area and education, may be considered
- Hands-on experience with instrumentation and control systems integration, including PLCs, embedded systems, sensor networks, communication protocols, and automated monitoring systems
- Proficiency in configuring, calibrating, troubleshooting, and validating sensors, data loggers, and measurement systems to ensure accurate and reliable experimental data collection
- Experience in project management, conducting applied research and familiarity with research management systems
- Excellent written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with limited supervision
- Demonstrated ability in programming and data analysis using tools such as Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW, with experience processing, interpreting, and validating large datasets from laboratory and field systems
- Experience building a respectful workplace culture that promotes diversity, learning and continuous improvement

- Salary Range for this position: $59,924 - $84,505 per annum
- Generous Paid Vacation: full-time employees accumulate a minimum of 15-days vacation per year, increasing to 30 days with service, while full-time Instructors accumulate 44 days per year. Information on casual and part-time vacation accrual is outlined in the Collective Agreement or the Terms and Conditions for Excluded Employees as applicable
- December Break: employees receive time off with pay during the period between Boxing Day and New Year's Day
