Position Overview:
We are seeking a Maintenance Engineer to join our Maintenance & Operations Engineering Support Department. Under the general direction of the Rotating Equipment and NERC Compliance Team Lead, will be responsible for providing the expert diversified and complex technical expertise on the maintenance, condition monitoring, overhaul, repair, and replacement of rotating equipment while maintaining safe, economic, and reliable operation of Transmission, Distribution, Converter and Generation Stations. The individual will develop maintenance programs for the Generation Operations plant equipment and lead root cause investigations for the proper operation of station equipment for optimum performance. Cross-discipline expertise will be developed to support all generator power train equipment.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical expert level leadership, support, training, and guidance to operational technical staff in the maintenance, testing, commissioning, and operation of rotating equipment.
  • Lead work with Operations, Asset Management and Engineering departments to identify needs, prioritization and project scope requirements for future maintenance and capital investment.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and provide recommended failure prevention measures on equipment forced outages. Initiate and help prepare capital and special maintenance estimates needed to implement improvement projects. Lead failure investigations and repair methods and create test plans for the restoration of failed equipment.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends in maintenance procedures and apparatus with a view for implementation where applicable.
  • Evaluate and support maintenance programs and procedures used for repetitive field maintenance, testing and commissioning. Participate in maintenance plan reviews to align maintenance on interrupting equipment in the corporation. 
  • Analyze tenders/quotations and prepare recommendations for the purchase or repair of rotating equipment and parts to ensure compliance with specifications and evaluate alternatives to determine best business case solutions.
  • Lead the development of maintenance emergency spare stock and parts criteria taking into account the installed base, failure rates, cost, availability, and upcoming maintenance.
  • Work with external suppliers, contractors, and consultants to ensure that the rotating equipment and installation meets performance requirements.
  • Establish training requirements related to current and new rotating equipment.
  • Support engineering activities for N.E.R.C. testing and standards compliance.

Qualifications:
  • Graduate in Electrical or Computer Engineering from a University of recognized standing plus a minimum six years of related experience, which includes a minimum of three years of field experience directly related to the design, operation and/or maintenance of hydraulic generating station equipment.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
  • Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Training is required and must be completed prior to transfer date and renewed annually.
  • Expert knowledge of hydraulic or thermal generators as applied to Manitoba Hydro generating stations, including related troubleshooting and support processes.
  • Advanced rotating equipment knowledge level and understanding of the theory, operation, maintenance, condition monitoring, overhaul, repair, and replacement.
  • Advanced knowledge of generating station design and operation, including electrical protection, excitation, governors, plant set point control, switchgear, lock-out tag-out systems, and other auxiliary equipment.
  • Comprehensive practical experience and detailed working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment in hydraulic generating stations or HVDC converter stations.
  • Understand maintenance principles, maintenance standards, task templates, practices and procedures relating to rotating equipment
  • Ability to evaluate and develop new equipment arrangement concepts for retrofit considerations, including considerations such as motor starting, equipment isolation and revised redundancy
  • Possess extensive knowledge in electrical rotating equipment test methods, evaluation of results and use of apparatus test equipment.
  • Prepared to travel and live away from home for short periods in performance of duties on short notice.
  • Safety conscious and be knowledgeable about corporate safety rules and regulations.
  • Self-motivated to carry out assigned duties with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and capability for providing technical support to field staff.
  • Possess and maintain a valid class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence.

Notes/Comments:
  • Depending on operational requirements, a headquarter zone and work location, may be Winnipeg or Gillam.
  • May be required to work at other locations within the province, and where transportation between these sites may be by small aircraft.

Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $48.74-$67.29 Hourly, $93,398.24-$128,947.78 Annually.
