Position: Family Counselor

This is a full-time permanent position, Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work could be required.  

Position Overview:  

Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Family Counselor will coordinate the overall programming for the mothers of North Star Lodge and Memengwaa Place. The incumbent will develop, facilitate, and coordinate parenting groups involving issues of child development, positive discipline, and other issues that meet the needs of the mothers and families. The residents are dealing with the vicious cycle of addiction, due to intergenerational family dysfunction, residential school impacts, and trauma related issues. The Family Counselor will help to guide the residents in their efforts to successfully re-unify their family and reintegrate back into the community.  
 
Experience & Qualifications:  

·         BSW or other related professional degree with a minimum of one (1) years of experience in working with families affected by family violence and/or a certificate in Early Childhood Education with two (2) years or more experience in working with families affected by family violence. The Indigenous Women’s Healing Centre reserves the right to consider any combination of work and life experience deemed acceptable to fulfill the role. 
·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). 
·          Excellent group facilitation, program development skills, oral and written communication skills.
·         Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions and language a definite asset.
·         Comprehensive knowledge, experience and skills using trauma informed counseling methodologies.  
·         Knowledge and understanding of issues around family violence, child welfare, and criminal justice as it pertains to Indigenous women and children.   
·         Awareness of the effects that intergenerational trauma has on the Indigenous population, specifically on women and children.
 
Skills: 

·         Working as part of a team offering holistic learning experiences designed at enhancing resilience factors, building confidence and life skills that support families to reach their full potential.
·         Working in partnership with families to assess needs and identify a family plan that will support family learning; a custom designed service will be developed that best meets the needs of the family, by building on the strengths and enhancing resilience factors that will enable positive sustainable change.
·         Working in partnership with families offering support, advice and guidance and interventions on a range of issues such as behavior management, domestic violence, health and safety, parenting, discipline and healthy lifestyles.
·         Working with individuals to build aspirations, promote confidence and self-esteem and develop positive parenting skills.
·         Working with new mothers and babies to assist them with day-to-day schedules and planning.
·         Plan, facilitate and coordinate programs that address the needs of parents, specifically regarding child development and positive discipline techniques.
·         Advocate on behalf of families regarding child welfare issues and other related matters.
·         Responsible for developing, planning (including developing of individual lesson plans) and facilitate evaluated parenting interventions via both group and one to one support.
·         Work closely with other partner agencies to ensure that resources are maximized and that there is a consistent approach to service delivery.
·         Assess and evaluate the needs of children and their parents.
·         Record all relevant information on work undertaken, highlighting decisions taken and desired outcomes and completing reports as required.
·         Attend and participate in case reviews, planning meetings, conferences and court hearings, providing written evidence/summaries as required.
·         Work as a team player ensuring cover where required for other team members, attending and contributing to team meetings and ensuring that the objectives of the team are met effectively.

·         Are always expected to build trusting relationships with residents and their children and to model appropriate behaviors.   
·         Must ensure that child safety is paramount consideration in all services and supports provided. 
·         Are expected to work with residents in a manner that is non-judgmental, accepting, and respectful of differing values, ideas and beliefs. 
 

All employees are subject to a criminal record and child abuse registry check. Must have a valid Manitoba Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle and already have or be willing to attain a CPR/1st Aid Training Certificate.
