Formed in 2023, Treaty One Nations Inc. (T1N) represents the interests of the seven signatory First Nations of Treaty No. 1, originally signed on August 3, 1871, at Lower Fort Garry. T1N is committed to advancing areas of collective self-governance, cultural preservation, and community well-being for its Nations. T1N is responsible for the governance and oversight of the development of the jointly held Treaty One Lands. The leadership of the seven First Nations of Treaty No. 1 forms the Governing Council of T1N.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Property & Planning, the Environmental Coordinator supports environmental stewardship across Treaty One Territory by coordinating environmental initiatives, research, engagement, partnerships, and project delivery. Working collaboratively with the seven Treaty One First Nations, Treaty One leadership, advisory councils, and external partners, the position helps strengthen collective environmental capacity and advance a coordinated approach to land, air, and water stewardship that reflects the priorities, knowledge, and interests of the Treaty One First Nations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Environmental Coordinator coordinates environmental stewardship projects and initiatives related to land, water, climate change, contaminated sites, environmental assessments, and other Treaty One priorities. The position supports project planning and implementation, coordinates consultants and technical advisors, tracks timelines and deliverables, conducts environmental research and analysis, reviews monitoring data and technical information, and participates in site visits and field activities. The Coordinator also monitors government policies, legislation, regulatory developments, and consultations that may affect Treaty One Territory and supports the preparation of briefings, responses, and recommendations. Working collaboratively with the seven Treaty One First Nations, Treaty One leadership, advisory councils, Knowledge Keepers, government, and external partners, the Environmental Coordinator supports engagement and the respectful inclusion of First Nations knowledge and perspectives in environmental initiatives. The position also identifies funding, partnership, training, and capacity-building opportunities; supports funding applications and reporting requirements; coordinates working groups and technical tables; and maintains environmental information and project records. The Coordinator prepares reports, briefing notes, presentations, and other materials that translate environmental research, technical information, monitoring results, and engagement findings into clear and accessible information for Treaty One leadership, First Nations, funders, and other audiences.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience
- Three to five years of relevant experience in environmental coordination, environmental planning, community engagement, project coordination, First Nation land stewardship, or a related field is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of Treaty One First Nations’ culture, history, inherent and Treaty rights, and relationship to lands, waters, and natural resources, with sensitivity and respect for cultural and community protocols.
- Knowledge of First Nations approaches to environmental stewardship and the respectful inclusion of First Nations knowledge and perspectives in environmental initiatives.
- Knowledge of environmental stewardship principles and issues related to land, water, climate change, contaminated sites, environmental monitoring, and environmental assessments.
- General knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation, regulatory processes, policies, and consultation processes relevant to First Nations and Treaty One Territory.
- Knowledge of environmental project planning, monitoring, reporting, funding requirements, and performance measurement.
- Understanding of environmental research, technical reports, monitoring data, and other sources of environmental information.
Skills
- Strong project coordination and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, deliverables, and reporting requirements.
- Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to review, synthesize, and communicate environmental and technical information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparing reports, briefing notes, presentations, proposals, and other materials for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong engagement, facilitation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work respectfully with First Nations, leadership, Knowledge Keepers, government, consultants, and external partners.
- Ability to coordinate meetings, working groups, community engagements, and environmental project activities.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, time-management, and follow-up skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing competing priorities and deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and the ability to learn and use project tracking, data management, mapping, and environmental information systems as required.
