Position Overview
The Blind and Visual Impairment Assistant functions as a member of an interdisciplinary school-based team of professionals and is responsible for assisting the Blind and Visual Impairment Educator in providing specialized blindness/visual impairment services to First Nations schools in Manitoba. This will include vision screening, programming, and consultative services within the three-tiered service delivery model to enhance access to academics and participation in school.
Education
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- Post-secondary education in a related field would be considered an asset
- Willingness to obtain certification in Unified English Braille (UEB) transcription while working
Qualifications and Skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure and meet all deadlines
- Professional behaviors that personify strong work ethics
- Understanding of and respect for Manitoba First Nations education systems including current developments, reforms, and socio-economic contexts
- Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills with the ability to work effectively in First Nations communities
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and build relationships with children, parents/caregivers, and interdisciplinary professionals
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information in both technical and plain language
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license, and an insured vehicle
- Willingness to travel to rural and remote First Nations communities
- Fluency in a First Nations language and/or experience working in a First Nations education setting are considered assets
