The Anish Healing Centre’s Yuwitaya Owashte Program – “Coming Together to Help in One’s

Healing” will provide safe, culturally strong trauma-informed services, workshops, and

ceremonies to Indigenous Victims of Crime (IVC), witnesses to a crime, their family members, and affected community members.

 

Victims and witnesses need to understand their legal rights and be aware of what will happen next as their case moves forward. They must relive their traumas repeatedly during police investigations and the subsequent trial for the criminal justice system to work. Victims and witnesses must recount their version of events in police interviews and court testimony. The Liaison will do all they can to mitigate the effects of repeating and reliving the trauma. The IVC Liaison will act as a bridge between a crime victim or witness and the criminal court. The Liaison advises the victim or witness as to how the criminal justice system works.

 

 

The IVC Liaison will have a wide range of duties, all geared toward helping crime victims cope with the trauma that the crime has brought about and navigate the criminal justice system. These responsibilities can include:

·         Assist victims/witnesses when filing protective orders.

·         Arrange transportation for victims/witnesses to attend court.

·         Help victims/witnesses seek restitution.

·         Coordinate with Anish Healing Centre staff to provide culturally safe and appropriate support services such as standing by victims during court proceedings, providing access to Indigenous medicines and ceremonies as needed, providing traditional counseling to victims/witnesses.

·         Coordinate with Anish Healing Centre staff (and others when necessary) to provide culturally relevant trauma-informed workshops, presentations and programming. These events will be victim led based on their needs which will be identified either verbally or by completing a written “Needs Assessment” with the IVC Liaison at intake.

 

From time to time the IVC Liaison may also refer victims to other government agencies or nonprofits that have the ability and capacity to provide necessary services that may be beyond the services offered in-house at Anish Healing Centre. 

 

The IVC Liaison position requires a minimum bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology or similar fields and 2 years relevant experience.

 

The IVC Liaison position requires that Criminal Record, Child Abuse Registry, and Vulnerable Sector checks be done and prove clear prior to start of employment and be updated yearly given the sensitive and confidential information the IVC Liaison will access in their daily work.

 

·         Excellent communication skills are necessary. Choosing and using the right words can be critical to a victim's peace of mind. 

·         Understanding and speaking French language is an asset but not mandatory.

·         People skills and capacity for compassion and empathy is critical.

·         Problem-solving skills are needed to weigh and assess the best options for victims in various situations.

·         Organizational skills are crucial as the IVC Liaison must accurately and meticulously maintain records and make them available to others, sometimes on a moment's notice.

·         Coordination skills are needed as programming would be victim led based on their needs identified either verbally or by completing a written “Needs Assessment” at intake.

·         Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System and victim’s resources are key.

·         Must be experience in working with Indigenous peoples.

·         Able to perform multiple tasks concurrently within a fast-paced, high-stress environment.

·         First Aid/CPR Certificate, an asset.

·         Valid Driver’s license and reliable vehicle are required.

·         Ability to travel within the Province of Manitoba when needed and must be willing to work a flexible schedule. (Overnight travel may be a requirement on occasion)

·         Efficient in the operation of a personal computer, including the use of word processing software and spreadsheet applications and other general office equipment.

·         Able to make reports as needed both written and verbal.

·         Open to carrying out other tasks as assigned.
