BACKGROUND:
Island Lake First Nation Family Services was originally established and operated under the auspices of the Awasis Agency of Northern Manitoba on April 30, 1983. On April 21, 1997, Island Lake First Nation Family Services was incorporated as its own agency.
Island Lake First Nations Family Services consists of four communities: Garden Hill First Nation, St. Theresa Point First Nation, Wasagamack First Nation, and Red Sucker Lake First Nation with the total population of well over 10,000 people.
SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Pre-Post Majority Services Supervisor, the Pre/Post Majority Life Skills Mentor will support youth and young adults up to 26 years old, guiding them towards independence and personal growth. We are seeking a compassionate and proactive Life Skills Mentor to join our team, where you will play a vital role in assisting our Pre-Post Majority Service Workers by offering both practical and administrative support. You will help guide young adults through critical life skills development. Our team is dedicated to fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment where young adults can thrive. Your role will involve a range of services including client life-skills assessment, client advocacy, effective communication, counseling and providing hands-on support in meal planning and preparation for one-on-one clients and/or to a group of clients. You will foster a supportive relationship with young adults, helping them develop crucial life skills such as household management and organization.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide practical and administrative support to Pre-Post Majority Service Workers.
- Assist with meal planning, preparation, and teaching skills.
- Ensure kitchen safety and hygiene standards are met.
- Facilitate hands on life skills education one-on-one and monitor client progress.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation according to agency standards.
- Coordinate with community resources and provide access to relevant services.
- Engage in crisis intervention and case planning as needed.
- Connect clients with community resources and culturally relevant services.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Family Support Worker Certificate an asset or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in the social services field.
- Skills in establishing supportive client relationships.
- Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) certification.
- Basic Rescuer CPR/ First Aid.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
- Excellent communication, organization, problem-solving, time management, and teamwork skills.
- Knowledge of life skills development approaches and community resources.
- Familiarity with community-based resources.
- Understanding and appreciation for Island Lake First Nation cultural beliefs, values, and norms.
- Knowledge and respect for the customs and traditional philosophy of the Island Lake Region.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Experience working in a kitchen setting and Certified Food Handler training are assets.
- Full driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- The ability to speak Anisininew (formally known as Oji-Cree) would be an asset.
SALARY: $52,295 - $60,919
