SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 33 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 92,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process. 

Reporting to the Manager of Court & Justice Services, the Family Wellness and Support Liaison serves as the primary point of contact for families impacted by Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S+) individuals. The position provides direct, trauma-informed, and culturally grounded support through advocacy, systems navigation, referrals, wellness coordination, and family engagement. The Liaison works collaboratively with families, communities, service providers, and justice partners to support healing, strengthen access to services, and ensure families receive responsive and coordinated support.

 

Direct Family Support & Advocacy:

•                    Serve as the primary contact for families impacted by MMIWG2S+, providing compassionate, culturally safe, and trauma-informed support

•                    Conduct intake, assess family needs, and assist families in accessing appropriate services and supports

•                    Provide advocacy and accompaniment where appropriate to support families interacting with service systems

•                    Maintain ongoing communication with families and provide follow-up support as required

Systems Navigation & Referrals:

•                    Assist families in navigating health, justice, social service, victim service, and community support systems

•                    Coordinate referrals to culturally appropriate wellness, healing, and support services

•                    Facilitate connections to Elders, Knowledge Keepers, traditional healing programs, wellness supports, and community resources

•                    Monitor referrals and follow up to ensure services are accessed successfully

Wellness Coordination & Community Engagement:

•                    Support the delivery of cultural gatherings, ceremonies, healing initiatives, and wellness activities for impacted families

•                    Encourage and support family participation in community-based healing opportunities

•                    Assist with event logistics and family engagement activities

Community Relationship Building:

•                    Maintain collaborative working relationships with service providers and community organizations to support family referrals and service access

•                    Participate in community meetings and networking opportunities to strengthen support pathways for families

Documentation, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement:

•                    Maintain accurate and confidential records of family contacts, referrals, services, and supports provided

•                    Track service utilization and emerging family needs

•                    Identify service barriers and communicate trends, concerns, and service gaps to the Program Lead

•                    Contribute information for reports, program evaluation, and continuous improvement activities

·         Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Counselling, Health Sciences, Human Services, or a related field is an asset. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and/or experience may be considered

·         Minimum two (2) years of experience providing family, victim, wellness, community, or social service supports

·         Experience working with Indigenous individuals, families, or communities 

·         Knowledge of MMIWG2S+, intergenerational trauma, residential schools, the child welfare system, and the impacts of colonization on First Nations communities

·         Experience providing trauma-informed, culturally safe, and client-centered services

·         Strong understanding of community resources, systems navigation, advocacy, and referral processes

·         Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with First Nations communities, agencies, and service providers

·         Strong verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills

·         Knowledge of Anishinaabe and Dakota cultures, teachings, traditions, and protocols is an asset

·         Ability to speak Dakota or Anishinaabemowin is an asset

 

·         A current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector search 

·         A valid class 5 MB driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle 

·         This position involves supporting families and communities affected by trauma, grief, loss, and violence and exposure to sensitive and emotionally impactful information. There is potential for vicarious trauma and compassion-fatigue and therefore an ongoing requirement to actively engage in self-care

·         If the employee is a member of a registered profession, they must be a member in good standing with their regulatory body
